Awhile ago, my memory card fell out of my Casio CZ causing the keyboard to lock up...all there is now is a blacked out LCD screen with various lights on all over the keyboard. The power indicator light is off, but power is still getting to the keyboard. How do I fix this? Please help

The same thing happened to my old CZ-101 for no obvious reason - I plugged it in after a couple of years of non-use and it had a blank LCD and lots of flashing lights but no sound. After trying everything from new batteries to pressing the reset button I ended up literally binning it and getting a CZ-1 for £85. Money well spent. Simon Beck London, UK

I thought the deal with the reset button was to hold it and THEN power up the unit, and release it after the keyboard has powered up. Something like that. There's a rather specific procedure in the user's manual, but I can't really recall since I don't have one here at work. Anyway, I hope there's some way to revive these things because I have two CZ-101s that I haven't powered up in years, and I hope they're okay... From the CZ-101 manual, a copy of which is in the files area, I believe: "About the P button "In order to clear any bugs (software malfunctions can occur in the memory during batter replacement, be sure to press the P button with a pointed object (1) after you have inserted batteries for the first time, and (2) after you have inserted new batteries when the time that has elapsed since removal of the old batteries is more than 10 minutes. Pressing the P button causes the 16 sounds set in the internal memory before shipment to be recalled. At the same time, any new tones you have set in the internal memory will be cancelled, so please be careful. "Be sure to press the P button when the power is turned ON, otherwise it will have no effect. Battery life is about 5 hours in the case of high-performance types (SUM-1). WHen the batteries begin to wear out, the power indicator will start to flash. If this occurs, please replace all 6 dry batteries with new ones as soon as possible."

This seems a strange problem, I'm presuming that when your RA5 /RA3 memory card fell out you had the synth plugged in and powered up? I know that the manual says that the cartridges should be replaced only when the unit is off . At this moment all I can suggest is that you find a sharp object to insert into the P button hole and while pressing it turn on the 101. To make sure that the P reset button actually connects it might be an idea to remove the back of the synth as some of the reset buttons don't actually connect as well as they should, this way you can be sure that you have at least tried . I would also suggest that you put new a new Cr2016 battery in your cartridge as they retain memory while they are in the synth from the power supply even when the battery is flat. Put the cartridge with new battery in and then try the reset procedure. According to the cz5000 manual disconnecting the memory cart while the power is on can affect the Ram , however it shouldn't affect the overall operations of the synth as the internal operating system is Rom. This leads me to believe that there may be something else wrong with the internal gubbins of your synth. If you remove the back of the synth have a look at the solder connections around the cart port and check that there are no dry joints (points where the solder has cracked and stopped connection of the components to the circuit) or that the actual board itself has not cracked, it maybe that there has been a problem on the board possibly due to a trauma or vibration that has been lying dormant until the cart came loose. If you spot any suspect looking solder joints re-solder them all , just applying a soldering iron to the spot for a few seconds is usually enough to cure the problem but if it needs a spot of solder then do that . check all of the board and especially around the adaptor socket. Adaptor sockets are notorious for getting dry joints and stopping gear from working . To check for a dry joint here insert the adaptor plug in to the socket and gently wiggle it while looking to see if the solder tags raise away from the board or any cracks appear in the solder, sometimes dry joints are so fine they are difficult to see so its a good idea to apply some fresh solder anyway. Another thing to try is another adaptor , especially if the one you are using is not a casio. the sizes of casio adaptors are slightly different from standard ones and if I use another adapter instead of the casio one then my 101 often won't power up until I give it a wiggle and ten it often switches off again. Make sure that the APO switch is set to OFF! Try these out and let me know how you get on. If you have no look then I'll have another fink! Good luck with your baby!! regarding the p button: my p button on the cz101 wasn't working so i unscrewed the case - the p button is a couple of copper strips that was corroded on it. simply clean the contacts with fine sandpaper and voila! reset whenever you want. casiolove, tim http://www.casionova.com/

Hey, CasioNova. I enjoyed your site. Too bad my computer audio is on the fritz, so I can't listen to your groovey MP3s. BTW, I used to have a Casio calculator that played music. (I used to play tunes for my students. As well, it was handy for timing their speeches.) One day it fell out of my pocket and it was never the same again. I searched all over, but couldn't find a replacement. Another cool feature was the ability to do addition and subtraction with dates. (March 5, 1990 - February 14, 1976 = ??? April 14, 1987 + 212 = ???). Also, on your wish list you have the CZ-3000 listed as having velocity sensitive keys. It doesn't. The CZ-3000 is a CZ-5000 without the sequencer. Neither are velocity sensitive. BUT: The CZ-3000 has the sequencer memory of the CZ-5000. (If you ever get a CZ-3000, try doing a sysex dump of the sequencer.) Hope to hear your MPs one of these days.

I think the one with velocity sensitive keys, is the CZ-1. I'll let you know for sure, as soon as I buy one! :) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Long time CZ list members may recall my previous posts within the past year or so about the CZ-5000 sequencer memory structure. Background: In the second half of the 1980s, I dabbled in writing midi programming (mostly using sysex) in Commodore 64 (6502/6510) assembly language. I began with the CZ-5000. One project was the start of a program to do software manipulation of sequencer memory dumps. Toward this effort, I mined the sequencer dump and got as far as writing a routine that would bounce one track to another track. Although a full-featured graphical editor was possible (and indeed still is) I stopped development. On this board I previously mentioned having my original notes for the cz-5000 sequencer memory structure. However, since I could not find them, I concluded that I may have thrown them out. Good news: I found them. So, if anyone is interested in writing software to manipulate sequencer data, my material could save you a couple of hundred hours of mining the dump format. BTW: Although the CZ-5000 sequencer was limited to a maximum of 8 voices, I seem to recall that when transmitting note data via midi there was no such limit. If I remember correctly, you could have more than 8 voices coming out simply by manipulating the number of voices listed in the track map. If anyone uses the CZ-5000 sequencer, a number of possibilities exist, such as a standard midi file to CZ-5000 sequencer dump converter, or vice versa. If there is any interest, let me know. --Dr. Steve

Yes, the CZ-1 is the ONLY CZ model with velocity sensitive keys. It also has channel after-touch, but only for volume and vibrato. I bought one a few years ago for £85 to replace a dead CZ-101 that I bought new in 1985. Fantastic synths - I wish they still made them! Simon Beck London, UK
