It's on the files section yes. It's a scan of an old VZ book that isn't avaiable
anymore, should be an equivalent to the manual, probably even better.

Re: [CZsynth] PLEASE

2004-06-15 by Renô

Ok, thanks ..

so i've already printed it to our synth player !

He says that the problem is that those docs always refer to the
digital display that is not available in his VZ-1 ! So it is helpfull,
but not enough.

What he really needs is a list of functions with all combinations
like

A1 - organ (for example)
A2 - strings (just another example)

so he will find easier what he wants instead of keep searching for
all the possible combinations, till he finds a display to buy.

That's it !!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!

Reno

Re: [CZsynth] PLEASE

2004-06-16 by ProDigInfo

Hi, Reno,

I think it will be difficult that someone breaks up his/her original manual
and scans it... it would take a long time.

But the community will be happy to answer specific questions.

What follows is a list of the patch names for the internal memory (INTERNAL

As you will guess, 11 means A1, 21 means B1, and so on.

This list has been extracted from the file "Alle VZ-Bänke.htm" that I found
on the web some time ago. There are many more patches available, that could
be downloaded to the VZ-1 with Steve Gutteridge's vzpatch.exe
(<http://casio.sallyandsteve.com/>http://casio.sallyandsteve.com<http://casio.sallyandsteve.com/>/)
(haven't you visited that site yet???)

This program - VZpatch - is a must (it's a little inconvenient that it only
works well with Win95/98).

When you have it running, you *must* check Freds Fee's patches (freds.vz1)
... those ones really outperform the Casio originals and take the VZ-1 to
another dimension...

Good luck to you and your band,

pdi

  Hi, Reno,

I think it will be difficult that someone breaks up his/her original manual
and scans it... it would take a long time.

But the community will be happy to answer specific questions.

What follows is a list of the patch names for the internal memory (INTERNAL

  48 KOTO 3 88 INIT VOICE

This list has been extracted from the file "Alle VZ-Bänke.htm" that I found

This program - VZpatch - is a must (it's a little inconvenient that it only
  works well with Win95/98).

When you have it running, you *must* check Freds Fee's patches (freds.vz1)

Mellotron patches for VZ???

2004-06-28 by ProDigInfo

Dear all,

after reading all the postings about the Mellotron patches for CZ-1, I was
wondering if it would be possible that somebody had something similar for
the VZ-1.

Alternatively, would there be a possibility to 'translate' a patch
definition from the CZ architecture to the VZ one? I think they are similar
'phase distortion' synths, but the VZ has more features... Maybe somebody
knows some tricks to do that conversion.

There are some excerpts from keyboard geniuses that I would like to emulate
(think of Tony Banks on Watcher of the Skies)

Thanks!

pdi

Hi pdi,

the VZ architecture is much closer to the DX7 than to the CZ-1, so it would be
much easier to convert a DX version of that sound...

Hello, Summa,

thanks for your reply.

I've done some search on the net about 'Mellotron', 'patch' and 'DX7', and
the results are overwhelming... too much to look, not too much time... So I
guess it could be faster to ask.

I use to play also with NI's superb FM7, so I could enjoy directly the DX7
patch. Do you (or anybody listening out there) know of a patch collection
or a site where I can find it? I've browsed the 640 patches collection from
DX-PEOPLE, compiled by Glenn Scott, but I'm afraid there is nothing there
about 'tron.

Cheers!

Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

2004-06-28 by ProDigInfo

Hi, people,

I have the opportunity to buy a Roland D10, not too expensive. I have
already a Casio VZ-1. I use it mainly for keyboard training and also as a
master keyboard -midi- to play virtual synths.

Of course, in an ideal world, I wouldn't doubt. But in this life there are
drawbacks. The most important ones are about space. And, sure, another
important one is the SWMBO factor (She Who Must Be Obeyed).

So, my question is for all of you who have been playing keyboards for years
and have a nice studio and love to play on two manuals, but also for those
who have been obliged to sell their gear for the lack of space... is it
worth, today with computers and vst's and so on, to have more than one BIG
keyboard on the studio???

By the way, what do you think about the D10?

Thanks for your reflections.

Best regards,

pdi

Yes, yes and thrice, yes! If you want, for example to have a full-keyboard piano sound in a song and play an organ solo halfway through, a single split keyboard just doesn't cut it. Sure, you can overdub the solo, but then you lose the spontaneity. I have a Studiologic SL-880 MIDI keyboard (88 keys, weighted, hammer action) driving an Alesis NanoPiano module, with a Danelectro "Tuna Melt" pedal for electric piano tremolo, and above it a Casio CZ-1 synthesiser (61 keys, synth action) for organ and synth sounds running into a Danelectro "Rocky Road" Leslie simulator. It works well, and you can couple the CZ to the 88-note keyboard via MIDI for layers.

Hi,

I don't know since I hardly use synth sounds I haven't programmed myself but I
would expect to find quite some mellotron sounds for the DX7, maybe named by a
song title. Since the Mellotron simply using tapes, I still think it would make
more sense using a sampler...

Here are some melotron samples as download...

Not for me.
I bought the CZ1 because it's 61 keys + I liked the sound
+ not available in rack and my mW XTk has only 49 keys.
I don't think I'll ever buy a third keyboard...

Re: [CZsynth] Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

2004-06-28 by Rocky Rodenbach

I suppose it all depends. I like collecting vintage keyboards, but because
of the space issue you mentioned, I had to sell most of mine. I feel
computers are an advantage, but then again, it's nice to play around with
the old analog systems and create your own sounds. I once had a Maxi-Korg.
It was the same exact keyboard that was used in REO Speedwagon's live
performance of Riding the storm out. Somehow, it ended up in a music store
a friend of mine owned. I was able to replicate the same filter sweep you
hear in the first few seconds of the song. That's probably the one keyboard
I miss the most. FWIW I just bought a DX7 on Ebay, and it rocks!! The 'ol
CZ1000 was good for special effects and such, but the DX7 is much more
dynamic. I've never played the D10, but Roland makes a pretty good
keyboard, it has it's own unique sound.

master keyboard -midi- to play virtual synths.

Okay, just to make my previous statement of not buying a third keyboard
I got in the funny situation where somebody proposed me a Kawai K-1
(don't know if it's mkII or not...) for USD.
If somebody could tell me about this synth from user point of view
I would be happy. Also, how "good" is to have a synth with 8 bit D/A
converters....
(btw: nobody could answer my question about the D/A converter bit depth
in Casio CZ-1 ????)
And how special is the sound ? Especially for techno, dnb, break, hip-hop
and
before all AMBIENT music ...

Re: Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

2004-06-28 by Dan

The Kawai K-1 is good for pads and ethereal sounds but the comment
that inevitably comes up about the Kawai K-1 is that it doesn't have
a filter...not even something similar to the CZ series' DCW envelope
and key follow. It all comes down to whether that is an issue for
you or not. Call me a traditionalist but I prefer my main synths to
have some sort of filter or "filter-like" implementation. e.g. I
have a Yamaha TG33 and even though there are workarounds to emulate
filter sweeps, I still feel like something is missing. It's a nice
extra synth to have on hand but personally I wouldn't want a
workhorse synth without a filter. (I don't count the DX7 as being in
this category though because you can add and remove harmonics to
emulate a filter.) [...if you're a better programmer than I am which
isn't saying much!]

Re: [CZsynth] Re: Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

As mentioned, I received a DX7 from an online auction, and I've heard
how difficult it is to program. I got a ton of real good about on the
subject from the person that sold it to me, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Needless to say, I got a few pages in to it and realized it was WAY over my
head!! And I'm a techy person, who used to own several synths at one time.
But enough of the DX7 talk, this is a CZ list. :) I'll be posting some of
my homemade patches I made on the CZ1000 here soon, enjoy.

In the interest of keeping things compact, I think it's much better to have
one keyboard (reasonably versitile, maybe with a sequencer, etc.) and a
bunch of modules. I have 3 full-size keyboards right now (well, 3 that
work- Ensoniq EPS, Keytek CTS-2000, and Casio HT-6000) and I have to say
that the lack of space presents a bit of a problem. For me at least, I
don't think there's much benefit of having two big keyboards (and the midi
complexity that goes with it) unless you're playing live or something and
need access to more sounds (or you just want to look cool on stage).

I don't know how well the D-10 works as a controller, but I don't think the
VZ-1 is the best in that department (nice keyboard, but no local off, if I'm
not mistaken).

Anyway, as for the D-10, from what I've read, it's not badl, BUT I would
strongly reccomend the Kawai K4 (or K4m) as an alternative- it's a similar
package, but more versitile synthesis-wise.

I've never had a K1 so I'm just theorizing- but I think it's the waveforms
in ROM which are 8-bit, not the DAC. That would just sound too raw, with
lots of quantization noise.

(actually some things do have 8-bit DACs, but other factors improve the
sound quality- the ESQ-1 has filters, the Fairlight CMI has a DAC for each
voice, etc.)

>(btw: nobody could answer my question about the D/A converter bit depth

guess not, I'd be very interested to hear that too..

I've heard it sounds good- the lack of a filter limits it a lot, but
stacking 4 oscillators per voice gives a lot of depth and motion.

It should also be noted that the K-1 II is a lot different from the K-1:

Re: [CZsynth] Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

2004-06-29 by ProDigInfo

Dear list,

Thanks everybody for your opinions. Simon Beck's reply brings an
interesting thought: it seems a good idea to have a hammer action, 88 keys
keyboard to play piano, while having another synth action keyb to play
synths and organ emulation.

It seems we all love to collect old gear and 'resurrect' those monsters
(Yamaha DX7, Roland D10/D50, Casio...) from oblivion. After all, they sound
the same as they did in the late '80s, and they do pack an enormous amount
of engineering and musicians work and background... you can feel it! But,
at least in my case, I have no room in my house for a synth museum. I'd
rather invest in a modern home studio.

For the moment, I think I'll stay with my VZ-1 and wait for an opportunity
to buy a 88 keys keyboard. IMHO, the VZ-1 has a nice keyboard action,
professional, not too plastic, and it seems hard like a rock. For me, it is
enough as a midi controller and it is, of course, a really interesting
synthesizer.

Re: [CZsynth] Mellotron patches for VZ???

2004-06-29 by ProDigInfo

Summa,

thanks for the link.

This thread started with an interesting idea: to convert patches from DX7
to VZ, as opposed to trying to convert from CZ to VZ. There are hundreds of
patches for the DX7 on the 'net, while not so many for the VZ. It would be
nice to be able to take those patches, at least as starting points to
program new ones for the VZ.

Has someone any ideas about that? Does somebody knows both architectures,
at least to give some clues? How many hours would it take to start with that?

Best regards,

pdi

Hi pdi,

I did a tutorial (VZ-Tutorial.txt) for this. It's in the files section of this

experience...

RE: [CZsynth] Buying a 2nd keyboard... your opinion

2004-06-29 by Ken Luke

I second this. I only have two actual keyboards, and a bunch of modules
(VZ10 being one of 'em). The ergonomics can be a little bit better as you
can (for example) have the keyboard right in front of you and then a rack
(or two) on either side within reach. Another plus is if your life
situation is such that you're moving your place of residence often, it's
much easier (and better for the gear) to just bundle up the rack instead of
having to box several keyboards.

Plus a rack full of gear looks really cool in the dark, that warm "Mission
Control" feeling ;-)

CZ patch conversion to VZ format

2004-06-29 by steve_the_composer

(1) With the VZ envelope architecture, it should be possible to
manually design Mellotron-style patches.
(2) About 10 years ago, I started to explore a software design to
convert CZ patches to VZ architecture, but
--(a) early on I ran into problems with not being able to modify
white/pink noise on the VZ, and
--(b) it was more fruitful to recreate/approximate desired patches by
hand (and more fun to create totally new sounds).
(3) If someone really wants to tackle automation of CZ patches for
the VZ:
--(a) I would think the first step is to design specifc VZ waveform
algorithms that approximate the different CZ waveforms.
--(b) The next step could be to standardize all the other VZ
parameters that have no counterpart on the CZ.
--(c) Then, one might make correlation tables of what VZ values mimic
CZ values for parameters where there is a counterpart.
--(d) Timbre envelope might be a problem since on the VZ you have to
do that using the line architecture and the DCAs.

If you have the desire and patience to do all that (assuming my
methodology is sound), my hat goes off to you. As time permits, I
would be willing to add my two cents to the project.

Once the correlations and algorithms are figured out, I might have
some thoughts on how to (1) parse/disassemble the CZ preset sysex
file and (2) assemble a VZ preset sysex file.

I think it would be an excellent project given the renewed interest
in the CZ and VZ sound. Of course another good project might be to
develop a conversion process for other ROMpler-based synth engines.

Finally, if anyone has figured out a way to simulate the filtering of
noise on the VZ so you can do what the CZ architecture can, please
let me know.

Hope this helps.
--Dr. Steve

PS: If there are enough people willing to tackle this, tasks could be
broken up and done piecemeal. For example:

--task 1: make a list of parameters with direct counterparts
--task 2: make a list of VZ parameters with no CZ counterpart
--task 3: make a list of CZ parameters with indirect counterparts.
--task 4: design a CZ patch that only uses parameters with a direct
counterpart in the VZ.
--task 5: design a VZ template that standardizes all parameters.
--task 6: design a standardized speadsheet based on the above.
--task 7: design routines to (a) parse/disassemble and (b) display CZ
patch sysex file data and (c) convert the data to a csv [or other]
file.
--task 8: design routines to assemble a VZ patch sysex file from a
data list.
etc.

Yamaha DX patch conversion to Casio VZ synth engine

2004-06-29 by steve_the_composer

I would think that the process I outlined for the CZ-->VZ conversion
would work well with the DX-->VZ conversion. I haven't played a DX
since the late 1980s, but I do have the sysex format in the MIDI
System Exclusive Book. As time permits, I can add my two cents to
this project.

Hope this helps.

Not sure what the envelope has to do with this, even so I prefere using multi
stage envelopes...

Understabdable :-)

Not that complicated except the duo ones, I did this for the FM7 and VAZ Modular
(not needed anymore since the VAZ now has hardcoded CZ-DCOs), should be easy to
convert to the VZ as well.
Well, that would be the knowledge I could share for this project, other than that
I'm pretty busy...

Well, the major problem will be CZ parameters that don't have Counterparts on the
VZ, like the two pitch envelopes. The VZ is imho simply closer to the DX than to
the CZ...

Well, another problem will be that the VZ base sound is completely different...

I think the noise is the least problem, I hardly did patches using that parameter
except a few drum sounds...

Re: [CZsynth] CZ patch conversion to VZ format

2004-06-29 by Simon Beck

One important element of the Mellotron is that it is effectively a sampler without loops. You have the attack stage (essential for convincing sounds, as the Roland D-50 proved 20 years later) and the 8-second-maximum sustain/decay stage (depending on the actual instrument recorded), followed by a dead cutoff, tempered only by the possible addition of a reverb unit. There is no release phase, as this is also a dead cutoff. The result is that the Mellotron MAKES you play it in a certain way to cover or exploit its limitations. Reverb helps, but you still can't hold a note for more than 8 seconds, so you tend to stagger note attacks and releases when playing chords, which covers the instantaneous release. Listen to "Days" by the Kinks for a good example of chordal Mellotron "string" playing.

[CZsynth] Patch conversion to VZ

2004-06-30 by ProDigInfo

Great!

This is gettin' hotter for moments!

I'm not very experienced with synths, I'm a newbie on all this stuff. All
this operators, algorithms, DCOs, DCAs, sound very funny to me, but I still
have to learn a lot. But I think I could contribute to the community with
some programming skills.

So, if someone from the list designs a procedure to translate patches, as
Dr. Steve outlined, I think the tasks could be shared among the community.

I don't know if the VZ series synth can sound like a DX7, but it would be
nice to try some of the hundreds of patches for the FM architecture that
are floating around, and see -hear- what happens. Maybe some new, cool
sound can make our speakers thrill once more.

Best regards,

pdi

No probs on that, here's an AKAI MFC-42 waiting for it :))))
