Please help with my CZ-1

Please help with my CZ-1

2005-05-07 by yazzofever

I've read about the Mac's, Atari ST's and countless other threads but
I'm still left with a question that I hope someone can answer.

I would like to download some of the patches in the FILES section to my
CZ-1. I know that will require some MIDI dumping?

I don't have an Atari or a MAC. I have a PC.

How do I transfer the files to my CZ-1?

CZ-101 and CZ-1's are not the same in this regard. The CZ-1 is
different beast when it comes to it's MIDI functions.

Thanks for your help
micah

Hi Micah,

you can use the ATARI Software with the ATARI ST Emulator Steem...

http://steem.atari.st/

You can find the editor software on Tims page...

http://tamw.atari-users.net

Thank you soo much Summa,

Is your reply meaning that there does not exist a
patch editor for PC or that this is the one you
recomend most?

Re: [CZsynth] Please help with my CZ-1

Hi Micah,

you can use the ATARI patch editor on your PC together with the Steem ATARI ST
emulation.

I'm not aware of other free software supporting all CZ-1 features, but to be
honest I never searched for it...

I use sounddiver for most of my synths including the CZ-1 and I think Unisyn and
MIDI Quest should work fine too. Anyway I tend to programm the CZ-1 directly from
the front panel and using editor software as librarian only, since it was my
first synth I'm used to the user interfance...

Just to confirm Summa,

Can I download your cool cz-1 80's sounds from
the file section using the Steem atari emulator
and czrider.

If so, that's amazing...

CZ Android should do, at least when it comes to most of my old sounds...

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/files/CZ%20-
%20Sounds.../Summa/Czsounds.zip

When it comes to the .MID files any sequencer should work, for sysex files I'd
recommend midiox...

EZ-CZ cartridge question!

2005-05-08 by M.J.B.

On a side note,

I've ran into something interesting. I've always
thought that the EZ-CZ aftermarket cartridges
that work in the CZ-3000,5000,1 are 64 voice
cartridges.

But I've worked with one one time that I could
only pull up 32 voices. Was that cartridge
damaged, was I not using it right, or were they
sold like that?

Re: EZ-CZ cartridge question!

2005-05-08 by steve_the_composer

It is indeed a 64 voice cartridge. The two switches are used to
select how you access the banks. With the CZ-3000/CZ-5000 you can
access A/B [16 patches] and C/D [16 patches] wthe the switches in one
setting. To access another set of 32 patches (and to flip A/B with
C/D) you need to move the switches.

The four possibilities are:

(1) A/B set 1 going to CZ A/B; C/D set 1 going to CZ C/D.
(2) A/B set 2 going to CZ A/B; C/D set 2 going to CZ C/D.
(3) C/D set 1 going to CZ A/B; A/B set 1 going to CZ C/D.
(4) C/D set 2 going to CZ A/B; A/B set 2 going to CZ C/D.

The switch settings for these configurations are:

(1)
X_
X_

(2)
X_
_X

(3)
_X
X_

(4)
_X
_X

Where X represents the position of the switch when you are looking at
the EZ-CZ right side up (hump on top/connector on bottom, switches on
left side of the front.

I believe this was done so that the CZ-101 could access 4 different
sets of 16 patches.

Basically, you can leave the top switch in the left position and move
the bottom switch to go from set 1 to set 2. (With both switches on
the left, moving the top one will simply swap AB with CD [set 1].)

Also, I don't think the banks work properly in the CZ-1.

BTW, if you don't have the original packaging, it suggests to replace
the batters within a year. (Of course, mine were still good after 5-8
years of non-use.) The package also says memory will remain up to 5
minutes while changing the batteries.

But don't blame me if it doesn't. I'm just telling you what it says.

Hope this helps.

--Steve

PS: If you have a digital camera, could you make and send me a jpg of
the EZ-CZ showing the switches? If so, I will try to make a guide to
post in the files section.

Hmmmm. Just opened mine up. Looks like the original batteries. They
must be almost 20 years old!!!! In addition to the switches, some
resisters and capacitors, and a couple of diodes, there's a SONY 5F
11 - CXK5864P-15L chip and a TI 605BN - SN74HC00N chip. (At least
that's what I think they are. My eyesight is not what it used to be.)

Re: [CZsynth] Re: EZ-CZ cartridge question!

2005-05-08 by M.J.B.

Thanks Steve,

Three questions:

1. Anyone figure out a way to get a cz-1 to
activate the full 64 voices on the ez-cz
cartridge because like Steve says, it doesn't
work correctly, you can only activate 32 voices.

2. Why does it seem that even though the CZ-1
was the top of the line that it doesn't have as
much options for it as regards cartridges,
editors and other stuff? I love that synth and
yet it seems like it is the most unloved of the
whole cz line?

3. One other thing, ARE YOU SURE the EZ-CZ
cartridge works on the cz-101? I thought the
EZ-CZ did not work on the cz-101's only the RA-6
cartridge.

Happy phasing-distoring,
micah

I think its because the earlier CZs were rather revolutiony,
competitively priced, popular with consumers and software and patch
designers, etc. Also, at the time, there were some cracker-jack
product support [marketing] people in the US who really promoted
people getting onto the CZ bandwagon. By the time the CZ-1 came out,
the market [and perhaps marketing] had changed.

No, I am not sure; I could be 100% wrong on this point. The
instructions do say for the CZ-3000 and CZ-5000. I think it was an
assumption I made decades ago and never really thought it out or
tested it. I never owned a CZ-101, though I played several--friends'
and in stores. Sorry for the erroneous assumption.

Steve,

thanks for the reply. that makes sense. I think
the cz-1 is underrated even to this day.

as far as the cartridge goes-you cleared up why I
only could get 32 voices out of it.

That is point for everyone else:

If you have a cz-1, no matter how you flip the
switches-you will only get 32 voices out of a
ez-cz cartridge.

CZanadroid-Atari St Emulationn(CZ-1)

2005-05-10 by M.J.B.

Thanks to Summa and others I have been directed
to Atari St emulation in my attempt to try to
find a patch editor for the cz-1. Besides it is
kind of intriging to use mid-80's software so I'm
really focused on getting it to work.

First of all for those who don't know you can do
it-you can. By downloading the STEAM emulator
Atari St from their site(v.2.06) you can actually
turn your PC into a fully functional "super"
atari st with MIDI capabilities. So awesome.

For software go to Tim's Midi World Website.

And that brings me to my question: I hope I
represent some who own a cz-1 and are frustrated
by the lack of software for this great synth.
Again, thanks to Summa, in an earlier post he
directed me to a program called

czanadroid

that is a patch editor/libriarn that looks like
it would do the job very nicely. The problem is
I have tried to figure out how to use it and I
can't seem to hack it.

Does anyone know how to get this program to work
with the cz-1, i can get it to run but what next.
Trust me, I would like to get to the point that
I could answer questions for others on this topic
but I have to learn the software first and there
is no documentation. Another one of my desires
is to be able to download Summa's cz-1 sounds off
the files list.

Please help casio/atari st users.

Micah

Have you set Steem to right MIDI device in Options/MIDI?

What next?

It's been some years since I used CZ-Android and used the software mainly to
backup my sounds.
Where you able to run the CZ_DEMO inside the ZIP? According to Tims description
this should be some kind of Tutorial...
If everything fails, give me a few days and ask again, since I'm currently under
high workload. I should have time to check after the 12th...

Can't wait for that summa,

I can get the program to run, but not the demo.
The demo starts and then ends suddenly. Tim says
that the demo has to be run with medium
resoultion on the display but even with this
setting I can't get it to run.

But sorry for bothering you during your heavy
work week. I'll wait for your help for this
after the 12th.

THANK YOU(can't wait to hear your sounds out of
my cz-1).

as impressive, since the CZ-1 was my first own synth... :)

...Summa
