My CZ1 doesn't have enought volume

My CZ1 doesn't have enought volume

2006-05-13 by Manu

Hi, I have a Casio CZ 1 with some sort of problem with the audio output.
After doing a search and not finding something similar on the past
posts I think that I need to ask for your help :)

Both line out and phones out share the problem. The output is fixed at a
very very low volume. It sometimes changes, but by his own desires, from
very very low to very low, or very very very low, and it ignores the
volume set in the audio pot. Yesterday, trying to find the problem,
there was about a second where the volume suddenly was restored to the
correct value, but after powering the synthesizer off and on, it was
again at the low value. Audio jacks are OK, audio cables are OK,
internal cables from the synthesizer are OK too. I already restored the
defaults and the battery outputs 3.45v, so I think it's OK too.
Schematics and tips would be welcome.

Thanks in advance! :)

Hmmm... could be the built in relais, to prevent klicks it connects
the output signal to ground until the synth is completely up. I had
that problem with two Casio Keyboard, a CZ-1 and a friends FZ-1. When
it fails the output tends to be very low, but randomly restores to
normal. One solution is to replace the relais another one is simply
to bypass it...

Great tip, I'm investigating just now. Yesterday, magically it worked
for some hours, so I'm pretty sure the bulk of the synth is in perfect
condition. What would be the best way to bypass the relays? Thanks a lot :)

Lo he dicho al reves. Si el Midi Out funciona, los relays son los claros
sospechosos. Si no funciona, el problema esta en la corriente que recibe
el sinte en si mismo, y por tanto seria el rectificador.

Eso :P

The relay may not be the problem- I'm not sure specifically about the CZ-1,
but sometimes relays that are used this way only switch on when the power
supply voltage has stabilized. If some voltage is out of spec, or
fluctuating, or whatever, then the relay might not turn on.

Anyway when the relay turns on or off it should make an audible click,
though you may not be able to hear it without opening the synth up- if this
corresponds to the audio output turning on and off, then you've found the
source of the problem.

Weird. After opening it, it's working a bit better. Just opening it. I
noticed that when the sound is gone, if I move the keyboard (it's now
unscrewed) the sound returns. In fact, if I press the keys gently the
sound works, but if I press harder sometimes the sound disappears again
for some seconds. Plus, one of the rectifier diodes look a bit burned,
in the small circuit board at the bottom right. My sixth sense is
telling me that it's going to be easy to fix the problem, but what's
confusing me is the fact that moving the keyboard fixes for some seconds
the sound. All the cables are firmly attached to the circuit boards, so
I'm not sure about what to think. Maybe the vibrations make the
rectifier diode make better or worse contact with the circuit board?
This component looks a bit burned, but it's firmly soldered to the
board. Any ideas? Thanks again, at least I'm pretty sure now that the
synth is still alive and it's going to survive :)

Take an unsharpened pencil and tap around gently on each part, sounds like a
cold solder joint somewhere. Once you think you got it, reheat the point
with a 15w solder gun and start over until it is gone. This addresses cold
solder joints. Good luck!

I remember having a problem with the relay in a CZ-1 once. The output sounded distorted. I think I fixed the problem simply by cleaning the relay. I can't remember if I just cleaned the solder joints or if there was a way to take the plastic cover off of the relay and spray some cleaner in it. I don't think it was a solid state relay.

Anyway, cleaning or resoldering is easier than bypassing the relay. To bypass I imagine you would need to take it off the board and jumper the audio input of the relay to the output, but without a schematic at least I couldn't tell you exactly what to do.
