MIDI Control through USB?

MIDI Control through USB?

2006-08-08 by illuminatusraw

I've yet to procure a Midi card due to the equipment purchases of this
weekend, (8 channel 320 watt keyboard amp/PA, Class A Digital
Compressor, Digitech Bass Synth auto wah (really cool stomp box)), so
as my thoughts drift through Internet, As Robert Anton Wilson refered
to William Gibsons Cyberspace, I start looking at these dirt cheap
high tech gizmos I read about in Future Music. If I was to pruchase a
Midi controller and rig my CZ 101 through the Midi loop, and then the
controller to the computer Via USB, would I be able to do patch dumps
and or Manipulate CZ sounds with the controller? Or will I have to
find a Midi card? I'm originally a guitarist and I can't thank all of
you in this group enough for how much help you are with my CZ.

Oh and props to Joerg for the killer Doc site

Here's a link to the controller I'm thinking of getting if that gives
you more Information

According to the manual the MIDI-Out of the Axiom can be used from
the computer as well, so sysex dumps shouldn't be a problem...
Realtime manipulation of the CZ sounds won't work well, even so the
Axiom can sent sysex (probably smalle strings only), since the CZ
always needs to receive a complete patch for a parameter change, what
will reduce speed tremendously...

A few months back, Guitar Centers had e-magic's MT-4 usb midi
interface (2 in 4 out) on a blow out for $30.00.

If your computer doesn't have a joystick port, you can pick up a
sound card with a joystick port fairly cheaply.

Read the manual. Does the controller have a midi in connection? If
not, you will not be able to use the controller to route sysex
>>from<< the CZ >>into<< the computer via usb.

If the controller will merge midi data >>including system exclusive
data<< from the computer together with its own midi data and send it
out to the CZ (and any other gear you have daisy chained), you
should be able to send sysex patches >>from<< the computer to the CZ
via the usb-->controller.

As summa pointed out, you cannot really manipulate CZ voices on the
fly. To change the sound, you would need to send a complete patch.

Hope this helps.

Midi control by using an external M-Audio Axiom USB KEyboard might be
a nice idea, but why don't you try a simple USB-MIDI Interface and
connect the CZ to the PC with it.
Then do the controlling by software. This might be cheaper.

Additionally I have to say that I read very often that people
recommending Midi-Interfaces for the joystick port of the soundcard.
This things are really antique and not worth the money.
There are 2 simple reasons why USB-Midi-Interfaces are much better:

1. the latency time is much slower with the joystick port-adapters

2. USB-Midi interfaces are getting cheaper every day.

I recommend the EDIROL UM-1ex (I have it for my self).
This Interface has a new FastTrack Midi Technology and is very easy
to install. Driver CD comes with it.

By the way....I added some more sections in my forum

Greetings

Joerg
