VZ-1 LC display

VZ-1 LC display

2006-10-02 by LUIZ EUGENIO BIROCHI REBECCA

Hi, everybody.
This question is particularly for the people used to fix their synths themselves. I need the VZ-1 display, as I bought mine without it.Maybe somebody knows how to get the original part or a custom made part compatible to the VZ. Here in Brazil we have firms able to manufacture the part but just in commercial scale ("how many thousands do you want per month?"). When I say that I need just one (part, not one thousand), they look not very cooperative....
  Thks all.

You may be able to find a compatible part- a 64x96 (or whatever) LCD matrix
probably wouldn't be that difficult to find (or scavenge from something, it
might even fit..)- BUT you need something that is compatible with the VZ-1
display driver (the service manual is available- you could find the part
number of the display driver if it's not some custom chip), and you need a
way to connect it (typically the LCD connectors aren't something that can be
attached by hand).

It should be completely possible to replace your display, but you will
likely find that it's entirely too much trouble. I don't know how easy it
would be to control the VZ from software without a display, but that would
certainly be a simpler solution.

Hello Luiz and everybody,

About two years ago I had to repair a CZ-101 and I found the display locally
in Spain. The official service here have some spare parts form our old
machines. Try to contact with they. Here goes the link:

Good luck!

I doubt you can operate the VZ from the computer w/o the display.
Here's why: you have to activate Sysx dumps from the front panel even
though the rest of the editing is done in software. That's annoying.
That's my experience with VZ-8m (a great synth, by the way).

Some synths are this way, some are not.

It's an annoyance, sure, but it wouldn't be hard to do it "blind" if the key
sequence is memorized (and it wouldn't be hard for someone here to provide
the key sequence for reference).

I can only address this issue concerning the VZ-8m. If the other VZ
have the same type of memory backup the VZ-8m does, unless you keep
track of your settings from system reset, it would be tough to do
blind. This is because the parameter settings including the last menu
pages accessed are stored in memory. For examaple, on the VZ-8m, if I
am on menu 02 on TOTAL CONTROL when I power down, that's where it
would be at when I press TOTAL CONTROL after power up.

If I recall correctly, with the CZ-1 you could maneuver through the
display menus via sysex, but I don't see that capability in the VZ-8m
sysex manual.

If the VZ-1 does allow menu page/display changes via sysex, that would
mean you can send a sysex chain as a seeing-eye dog. Anyone know if
the VZ-1 has that?

Hope this helps.
