First off, thanks for posting the link to the CZ-500 Manual. Second, I'd like to suggest to the designers here some mods. (I don't have the expertise.) The CZ Stereo Chorus seems to have potential [pardon the pun]. Seriously, the user interface simply allows to CZ owners to increase the chorus effect from 0% to 100%. However (and remember, I am not an electronic engineer), the CZ-5000 manual spells out the circuitry of the chorus and it looks to me like it might be possible to tap into it an make additional user controls. If I am right, it might be possible to: (1) develop manual controls (knobs to vary the effects) (2) develop programmable controlling circuitry (effects presets) I am wondering if the engineers here think this is possible. If so, it would be nice to breathe new life into the CZ Stereo Chorus. (See schematic on p. 3 [original page number] and block diagram on p. 44.) Also, I am wondering if someone would be motivated to develop an add- on board to increase the capabilities of the sequencer (on-board storage and slection of songs, inputting of non-documented note values, etc.) Just some thoughts. --Steve --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "Patrick Wichrowski" <patrickillian2@...> wrote: > > the complete service manual of the "Casio CZ 5000 Cosmosynthesizer" !!! > > 43 megas: > > > http://www.4shared.com/file/40060398/87aff40d/Casio_CZ_5000_Service_M anual.html >

Thats why I scanned the service manual ... it might help people to develop modifications ;) 2008/3/8, steve_the_composer <smw-mail@...>: > > First off, thanks for posting the link to the CZ-500 Manual. > > Second, I'd like to suggest to the designers here some mods. The chorus certainly does have potential for modification- it's a matter of how far you want to take it and what would be considered practical and useful. It would be possible (with considerable effort) to vary the delay clock rate (and thus delay time), modulation speed and depth (with additional LFOs), adjust output levels and add feedback controls to each of the 3 delay circuits, optionally chain them in series, add an external input, add CV inputs to control delay time or modulation, bypass the input filter for "lo-fi" aliasing effects, adjust the wet/dry mix, etc. Probably taking it to that extreme would be a little excessive and not really conducive to making "nice sounds" (and some external box would probably have to be made to house the controls), so it would make more sense to do something simpler. It could be made "sort-of" programmable if, for instance, you wanted to choose between 3 "modes" and then control modulation depth with a knob, but making it fully programmable or integrating it with the CZ's interface and patch storage would be far more trouble than it's worth. Similarly, I think expanding the sequencer wouldn't be worth the effort. Anyway I appreciate how thorough and descriptive the manual is, even though I don't own a CZ-5000. Has anyone else noticed references to the "cramping circuit" on pages 4 and 52? To: CZsynth@yahoogroups.com

Patrick, thanks a lot! I hope I never need it, but I'm glad to have it! synergeezer --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "Patrick Wichrowski" <patrickillian2@...> wrote: > > the complete service manual of the "Casio CZ 5000 Cosmosynthesizer" !!! > > 43 megas: > > > http://www.4shared.com/file/40060398/87aff40d/Casio_CZ_5000_Service_Manual.html

i'm not an engineer, but my vote is use the built-in chorus if it does
what you need, otherwise run the CZ through outboard effects. if you've
never run a CZ through a quadraverb or SE-50 (or just about any other used
multi-effects box for <50$), you're missing half the fun.

re-writing the OS is beyond what i would take on, but i would say the best
"return on investment" for anyone who wants to do that would be a new OS
for the CZ-101 that adds velocity control and real-time programming of all
parameters using midi CCs. do that, and a patch-dump is just sending a
bunch of CCs, which means more patch memory isn't a priority...
if someone did that, i'd sell my (big, huge, heavy) CZ-1 in a second and
grab a 101. it's been a while since i've opened one up... are the circuit
boards in a 101 small enough that it can be rack-mounted?

Thanks for the manual! There are no excuses now, the programmers among us can just socket those ROMs and hack away. Anyone knows if the tools for programming the NEC 7800 series microcontrollers can still be found?
