after...

Completely agree, You might prefer sounds a la Michael Jackson, so You would need lots of Dx Fm'ish sounds, or instead analog percussive sounds and sweeps Kraftwerk-style. More, fat analog-ish pads in the good ol' progressive rock bands mood....Just let us know!
Cheers!

The 80's covers 10 years - that's a LONG time in synth sound history
and evolution.

Having said that, the genuine article (Yamaha DX, Casio CZ, Roland
D50) is reasonably cheap and easy to find 2nd hand, and for late
70's/early 80's sounds, there are good VAs that sound pretty similar,
such as the Korg MS2000 (=MS20), Oberheim OB12 (=OB8), Nord Lead
(=Prophet1/5 - very good for Yazoo sounds), Roland JP8000 (=Jupiter8).
A Waldorf Microwave is an afordable substitute for a PPG Wave.

While none of the VAs are exact matches for the originals, they're all
good enough in a mix, and easier to use and maintain than older
synths.

For drum sounds however, the best thing to get is a Roland R8 or R8M
with an 808 (electronic) and a 909 (dance) card, or a R8II. The R8 is
just about the best drum machine ever, and perfect for the 80's
sound(s)

I've been accused of being rather '80s sounding - judge for yourself.
http://www.myspace.com/bigbadsoloproject
R8M used exclusively for drums.
Synths used (roughly in order...)
Oberheim OB12; Nord Rack 2; Waldorf Microwave; Roland SH101; Korg DSS1;
And the odd guitar and bass.

hey there, i'm new to the list. i signed up to learn more about my
cz-101 (which mostly means figure out to install some patches - seems
pretty straightforward but haven't done it yet).

this caught my eye:

where would you get the 808 and 909 cards? are they something that was
manufactured at the time or would you have to make your own? i guess
this would be akin to using 808 or 909 sounds on an mpc or other
sampler?

The cards were manufactured by roland, my best guess would be to look on
ebay to try to find them.

Buy 'em off ebay. I was lucky - I got 6 cards thrown in with my R8.

Manufactured by Roland. Though they are all basically sample based.

Sort of missing the point I wanted to make. It's more like the other
kits that are very 80's. Everyone does 808 & 909 sounds, and as
they're '80s sounds, they also need to be included. If you want 808
sounds, there are other good sources. If you want to sound like Stock
Aitkien and Waterman with a minimum of outlay and work, then the R8 is
perfect.

Also, 808 & 909 cover either very specific timeframes, or very
specific music styles. Most music from the '80s does NOT use either of
these. And a LynnDrum was the weapon of choice of you could afford
it...

======================

IIUC, just look for an R8mk2. it has all of the cards built in.
