[CZsynth] VZ Editor

2001-04-20 by Angel Reyes Jimenez Anguita

Hi all,

Does somebody know a free or shareware VZ patch editor for PC? I use
SoundDiver with all my synths but it doesn't support my VZ10m :-(
Someone could help me?

Thanks

Hi,

Sounddiver do support the VZ-10M...(except one little problem, it seems to
send the wrong command to set an oszillator to fixed frequencies)...
Other then that you could check out this link:

for a free editor software...

Wow I was gonna upgrade to the full version of SD (from the K5k OEM version)
so I'm glad to hear that SD does support the VZ because I have 3 of them.
OUCH though I'm not sure I want to upgrade if their module is buggy...I
wonder if they can fix this bug.....

Hmmm... try ask that question on the yahoogroups Sounddiver mailing list,
with some luck you can get an answer from Michael Haydn, the chef sounddiver
programmer, maybe emagic is going to fix the bug if enough SD users are
interested in this...
As far as I know it's the only bug. Other then that the editor has to
transmit the complete patch on every change of parameters, so you can't hear
the updates instantainously...

RE: [CZsynth] VZ Editor

Holy smokes, this is getting out of control in another week or so I'll be
subscribed to a ton of these cool lists! I didn't know there was a SD list.
I'll check that one out.

About the individual parameters, the MIDI implementation on both the VZ and
CZs require that the whole patch be sent so that's not really a bug at least
not a bug of SD.

I know that and have the same problem, I think I'm in 15 or more lists
now... sometimes, when there's much traffic, I even miss answers to my own
postings...

Yep, I know this :) But I just wanted to let you know, in case you weren't
aware of this. Since the VZ is having a lot more pararameters then the CZ it
needs even a bit more time to transmit.

Hi.
Im very new to this group and checking out some old and new messages.
Are you still looking for a VZ 1 patch editor? Anyway go to
http://www.steveandsally.freeserve.co.uk/casio
While your there. click on software, and from there, you'll see
a white icon. Thats the vz1 editor. After you download the editor, you
need to download the vbrun300 to make it work. I guess your all set
to go for now. If theres any problems, I'll be very glad to help you
out with this. Well take care and enjoy your holidays.

Regards!
  Clifton

VZ Editor

2015-02-13 by facebook@...

Hi All,

more than a year ago I asked for advice on the sysex format (checksum) because I wanted to create an editor for the monster.

The year has passed, and after a long break I took up the project again. Now I would like to ask the group, if there are interested parties, who would like to help me by providing feedback on the prototype.

It is a browser based graphical editor for the VZ and HS-2 developed for the chrome browser. Right now tone editing is implemented.

· Only a screen resolution of 1280 * 800 is supported so far, so I'd appreciate your feedback on your screen resolution.

The The ‘jazz-plugin’ needs to be installed from http://jazz-soft.net/ and needs to be activated in your browser.

(it is necessary for the low level midi support)

Everyone who is interested maycontact me via vz@cain-project.com for the details.

Kind regards,

Pete

I'd like to try this even thoughI have Czs not a VZ (yet) as I am developing editors myself and know the value of feedback on layout/design etc.

Hi All,

more than a year ago I asked for advice on the sysex format (checksum) because I wanted to create an editor for the monster.

Everyone who is interested maycontact me via vz@... for the details.

Kind regards,

Pete

Re: VZ Editor

Hi all,

the VZ-Editor is in a shape, that at least for me it is usable for editing tones and also loading a tone from a sysex file to either save on the vz or use as a starting point for further editing.

Thank you Steve for providing usefull hints on improvements for the project!!

You can find the editor here if you want to try it out:

I added a help button to get you started.

Please report back any issues you encounter or any suggestions on how to improve the baby.

Cheers and I hope you will have fun,

Pete

Hi all,

everyone is welcome to use and try out the VZ-Editor.

Steve, thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

You can access the editor using the following link:

I do not save or record any of the actions or data, which is transmitted to the editor or manipulated with it.

Have fun and please provide a feedback on the functionality, usability and any other topics you think might need improvement.

Via the help button a (very brief) reference guide is opened.

Cheers,

Pete

Found this on the old Easy VeeZee archive:

Hope it helps!

"There is a checksum on the end of every block of voice patch data (336
bytes) and on the end of every block of Op patch data (100 bytes).

To get the checksum, add up every byte in that block, take the last seven
bits (ie MOD 128) then subtract the answer from 128 to get your final
checksum value.

Don't forget that all data bytes, and the checksum, are transmitted as two
four bit nibbles and that the HIGH order data is transmitted first and NOT
the Low order data as mentioned in the SysEx manual page 8 (Gotcha!)"

Hi Mark,

thank you for the reply. In the meantime I have implemented the editor and it is now available for the group.

vz.cain-project.com/VZEdit.html

I tried to post that already 5 days ago, but it seems like I was doing something wrong.

It is browser based and should be applicable for Win and Mac, given the jazz plug in is installed and activated.

I do not track or store any of the data, which is being edited with the tool. Also I am happy to receive feedback on how to improve the editor.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks for that info - it is basically the same "twos complement of 7 bit sum" but it is as well to know when to apply it.

Pete's Web-based VZ Editor

2015-03-08 by smw-mail@...

Since he has been unable to post himself, Pete asked me to announce the availability of his editor-in-progress. I have tested it myself and have provided feedback. Keep in mind it is still very much in progress. Below are some excerpts from e-mails he has sent.

14 Feb 2015:

As I announced, there is still work in progress and I first concentrated on the technical feasibility of the task and on how to boil down 440 parameters to a manageable number.

The VZ Editor is a browser based tone editor for the Casio VZ 1 / 10 m and Hohner HS/2. For low level midi functionality the ‘jazz-plugin’ needs to be installed from http://jazz-soft.net/ and needs to be activated in your browser.

Once you have installed and activated the plugin you may open the editor page in your browser. The Jazz plugin will most probably be blocked, when you enter the page the first time (usually indicated by a red ‘X’ in the address line of your browser). Ensure that the usage of the plugin is allowed for the VZ Editor.

From then on you may start to compose your sound. To transfer your sound to your VZ select the midi connection at the upper right and then click on the transmit button.

20 Feb 2015 (from pdf):

Casio VZ Editor – Reference for 'hidden' Functionality
1. select the mix/modulation type of the modules
2. select the external phase for the lines
3. activate/de-activate a module and copy a module's settings to another via drag & drop (no
graphical update implemented yet, but you see the effect on the VZ or when opening a
graphical editor … it's on my to do list.
4. Click on the envelope to edit it
1. set end and sustain points by clicking on the nodes (yellow = sustain / red = end)
2. set the rate velocity by clicking on the line (red indicates, it is activated
3. edit the values using the text boxes beneath the editor
4. to minimize the editor click on the '-' on the far right (the key follow might overlay the
envelope... just kill them and open them again … it's on my to do list.
5. Click on the key follow curve to edit it
6. The global pitch cure is hidden here
7. to 'lock' envelopes or key follow curves click one or more of the yellow 'LEDs' the curves
will change simultaneously

7 Mar 2015:

Hi all,

I have decided to publish the current project to all interested parties, so they can put it to use and maybe provide feedback for further development.

So the link may be spread.

I tried to announce this in the mail thread in the group, but somehow none of my messages gets through anymore (I tried it 4 times, but the reply to the thread just is not posted :( )

If any one of you could spread it in my name, that would be great.

Even though it is a web based browser, I do not save any information

(sounds) which is processed through the app.

Kind regards, and thanks,

Pete

hello guys

i am also new here and really happy that there are actually still people out there who like the vz cz series! (=

i was just trying out the editor and the idea seems to be great but i kinda can't get it working. i downloaded jazz and am working with opera. chrome doesn't seem to recognize jazz.

i plugged everything together but the only what i can do is trigger my vz10m with the play button. every other function is not working.

so, do i have to get in special mode with my vz or what am i actually missing?

thanks guys

I have had the jazz-soft plugin working several browsers under windows. I recommend registering for the forum and asking there. I found the developer helpful.

Hi Pete, your editor is working great here, thanks a lot !
There is one thing i am missing, that would make it perfect:
receiving the actual patch or a bank via sysex from the VZ - and maybe an option to save/export patches as syx-file.
Are you planning to add these features in the near future, is this possible somehow ?

At the moment i can edit a patch from scratch or modify a loaded sysex - but the next time i can't get i back from the VZ into the editor. It would be really great if the editor could receive sysex dumps sent from the VZ .

At the moment your editor seems to be the only working solution, i almost tested everything.
SoundDivers module is buggy on some parameters, Midi Quest does not work well at all (Midi problems), Steves VZPatch runs only on very old computers using Win 3.1 or Win 98, Unisyn did not work here for me, neither in Windows or MAC 10.6.8 - and this is all, except a few old editors for Atari, that i did not test.

Your web-editor is the only solution that worked flawlessly except the limitation that it does not receive sysex.
Are there any plans for an update ?

Hey Helfried,

I'm happy you could make use of the editor. I currently have no timeline for changes or a real todo list on what I want to do with the editor.

Due to the ever evolving security restrictions, which are being introduced to the different browsers I will most probably try out a java version for the editor.

The real round trip back from the VZ to an editor or wherever must be initiated by the synth itself. My workaround currently is to dump my VZ via MidiOx and to then re-load it to the editor.

Also, I did not put too much further effort in the editor, because there was no feedback, whether someone finds it useful or not.

Kind regards,

Pete

Re: VZ Editor

Almost no feedback--I might have been the only one. Maybe there other now. As time permits, I will be happy to test drive new versions on my VZ-8m.--Steve

Re: VZ Editor

2017-11-13 by petekuhn@...

Hi Steve,
how could I forget you.
Yes, indeed you provided very valuable feedback while I was working on the project and thank you very much for that.

After publishing the project, feedback from users who tried it out was a little scarce. But maybe it is due to the fact, that there are very few VZ users.

In the meantime I am trying out a CZ-inspired synth of my own and the goal it building it as a Raspberry Pi (sound engine in C++) , Arduino (hardware controller) hybrid device.

In the course of building it I came back to the Java Sound API to build an interim editor for my engine (which is already working) Based on the experience I will try out a second version of a VZ editor based on Java, to avoid the limitations of browsers and their security restrictions.

Kind regards,

Pete

Hi,
Recently added VZ-1 to my casio family, and the web editor looks

Is there a remedy/workaround or am i simply doing something wrong ...?

Re: [CZsynth] VZ Editor

It's been a while since I test drove the VZ editor. Does it use the Jazz-Soft plug-in? If so, do you have that installed? Sorry, but I don't remember. Also, if it does use it and you have it installed, try different web browsers. I do recall that over the past year or some, some web browsers made some changes.

If we were;nt expecting a heat wave, I'd offer to do some tests to see if I can get the editor working, but my brain stops working when it gets too hot.

Re: [CZsynth] VZ Editor

Hi Steve,
Yes i have Jazz-Soft installed, tried IE, Firefox, Chrome with same result,
everything except the selection of midi-interface and channel seems to work.

I´m also enjoying the heatwave so no worries ... when you find the time and inclination i
appreciate your effort. I´m itching to try out the VZ editor, looks like a perfect match to
replace and balance out the somewhat daunting standard interface on the synth.
Kind Regards
