CZ 5000 - please don't die on me..

2011-06-18 by lloydsmith1961

Purchased a nicely looked after CZ5000 from a friend a few months back.

It has gradually become slower & slower to switch on. The display shows a line of boxes & then after a while there's the click & characters/sounds appear. This delay was initially intermittent - sometimes it would switch straight on. Last night (isn't it always the way) about to use it for a studio project to find it wouldn't get beyond the grey box stage - no click, no characters, no sound & no buttons operational. Have checked/tested the 3 AAA batteries which are all good.

Is there an internal battery to check, or is this irrelevant? I want to avoid spending at least what it is worth getting it prof repaired if possible. Greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks

Tim

Have you tried to initialize? There's a button for it. But maybe it
will not work if you can't read display.

Try to remove batteries and then switch on and perform initialization.

There's no internal battery.

If it went gradually worse and worse, it can be some contact problem,
or transient resistance somewhere. Probably it needs some small
maintenance and cleaning inside. I would open it, disconnect all
connectors (one by one), clean them with some contact cleaner and
connect again. It's good to repeat more times to disconnect and
connect the connector for cleaning. And check power supply voltages
to be sure this is OK. There are more grounds - digital, DAC, frame
and analog...

If this doesn't help, you have to get it check by professional
serviceman.

If you need Service manual, I found it somewhere on the net and can
send you thru some big file sending service (9.6 MB PDF).

Good luck.

Since it got slower and slower and then failed to initialise - is there are a crystal that may have failed... in any Microprocessor system there will be a crystal oscillator driving everything that happens in sequence - the slowness maybe due to it being on the verge of failure and then when it failed stopped initialising altogether - just a flying guess.

Sounds like a problem around the power-up reset circuitry. I'm not sure
if there's a circuit diagram floating about but somewhere in there you
should find a resistor to +5V and a capacitor to ground. As the
capacitor charges the reset pin goes from 0V to 5V. Check for spillage
on the board around there, or signs of distress from the capacitor.

Note that this does not mean "blindly replace every capacitor you can
see in the hope this makes a vague problem go away". That's the reason
I've had to scrap several synths people have brought round to get
fixed...

Ok, have an electronics engineer mate going to take a look, will pass your suggestion on. Interestingly if left long enough it does eventually go on, & once warm will switch off & on immediately. However, after I got an electric shock of the rear of the casing I thought better of using it until checked. Thanks for your help Gordon.

Tried initialise, but thanks for suggestion & useful link. Due to get free specialist attention so will report back in case findings helpful to others. Cheers, T.
