Semi-OT: My electro-pop duo from the mid-1980s!

Semi-OT: My electro-pop duo from the mid-1980s!

2011-11-20 by Simon Beck

I've finally digitised the songs from Mix It Up's debut (and only) record, the 4-song EP "Mickey Reform", and put together a web page about the band. All the keyboard parts apart from the real piano and real Fender Rhodes were played on a Casio CT-202 or a Casio CZ-101 (using my own sounds). As far as I remember, the organ, the flute and some of the strings are from the 202; and everything else is CZ-101. I also did all the rhythm programming and played bass guitar. This is what I was doing back in 1986...

Hope you enjoy it!

It's very much of its time, and you can tell it's good because the B-side is better ;-)

(four plays later)

I've got a Fostex four track kicking around here somewhere...

Maybe it's just me, I have a bit of a thing for lush strings and reverb-drenched female vocals.

Of course its strange. Its meant to be strange. It is a slice from a song called "Hole in the Ozone layer" and if you think the instrumentation is bad then you wouldnt want to hear my singing.

What I was doing with the CZ was sending a program change for every note so for example a 16 note bar would have 16 program changes. Pretty spastic eh!

i too find interest in the program change ..
utilize , optimize...maximize ,,is my belief...
and
 believe it or not
i got a couple of my original midi files from 1998/99 ,when i first began
as a midi musician, that sound very similar to your file..but strangily it
was never meant to sound that way ..

thanks for sharing
charles.

there is no such thing as a specific program change on every note
function. prog changes are included in the MIDI spec so are not a
function per se of the synth unless it is incapable of accepting prog
change commands. The thingy is a sequencer like cubase which sends out a
prog change command to change a patch. say you have a piano sound on a
patch and at some stage in the song on the same track you wish to now
play a brass sound on the same instrument but a different patch. You
simply send out a prog change. What I was doing to amuse myself was for
every note in a sequence I would send a prog change. The CZ has 16
assignable patches (I didnt have a cartridge) and I would send out 16
prog changes in rapid succession. As an interesting side effect I also
had a LED lightshow on the CZ.

I like the lightshow idea! Of course if you have a Yamah PSR or Casio LK etc then you get the same thing.
The other way of enabling patch changes on notes is to have a program that monitors the MIDI out and checks for notes and sends patch changes for a given note to the MIDI in - I suspect MIDIox could cope with that. None of this is peculiar to a CZ.

This technique has some limitations:

- can be used only in non legato music, where notes are not
overlapping. Chords are possible.

- PC must be send slightly before note. Ideally during pause.

- Some synthesizers need some time to change the program so there can
be some delay after PC message.

- PC will abruptly stop sounding previous note on most synthesizers.
Release part of envelope will probably not sound until the end.

- on synthesizers with effect processors PC will mute the effect and
needs more time to be done.

yep !
 you are right ,
but just to add the cz in mono ,mode will play 4 voices on 4 indipendant
channels,,,
so some legato /duration will be obtainable...
