CZ3000 Velocity via MIDI

CZ3000 Velocity via MIDI

2014-01-02 by <robbage.rh@...>

Hi there, fantastic group for a fantastic synth!

I have a quick question regarding my CZ3000. I am currently triggering it from Ableton Live and wondered if there was any way I could make it respond to velocity information send to it? I've read the CZ1 was the only model that had velocity sensitivity on the keys.

Many thanks in advance

Rob, Leeds, UK.

Hi Rob, For any (physical) synth, check the MIDI Implementation Chart for what parameters are sent and received. The chart is typically in an appendix @ the back of the user manual. Regards, JPS

Both the CZ-3000 and CZ-5000 are incapable of transmitting or receiving velocity data in the range of 0 to 127. As you read, the CZ-1 does indeed send and receive the full range.

The CZ-3000 and CZ-5000 transmit velocity data as 64. I forget whether vv = 64 -> 127 is note on and 00 -> 53 is note off, or if note off is just vv = 0 and anything else is note on. (I think its the latter, but you can check as was suggested in the midi implementation sheet or in the CZ MIDI Guidebook (available in the files section).

Hope this helps.

Steve

Footnote: Some early synths/manufactuerers, such as the Casio CZ and VZ, had the midi implementation on a separate sheet. I don't know why they did that. Perhaps the user manuals were written before the midi implemetation was finalized. Of course, that didn't bother some manufacturers; they just didn't tell people about undocumented features!
