VZ-1 MIDI connectivity issues

VZ-1 MIDI connectivity issues

2018-07-25 by thyantiproduct@...

Hey all, what a nice group you have made here!

After a decade of drooling over synths,I got my 1st one which is a Casio VZ-1. Needs some cleaning and perhaps a new screen sooner or later but nevertheless it's a beast!

I'm having issues though trying to connect it via MIDI. Reading through group posts and files I managed to transmit midi from it as well as sysex, which is the main point. Problem is I can't get it to receive sysex. Tried most tutorials/recommendations on connecting via MIDIox and MidiQuest pro,but I can't get it to work...

E.g. I select a patch from the keyboard and the corresponding voice window opens up in MidiQuest and I can normally save voices via midiox and midiquest.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Anything I haven't figured out? Maybe a setting I've missed?

Thanks in advance and good to be around.

Hi Yiannis,
I've found the VZ-1 to work nicely with MidiQuest. Some things to check:
* On the VZ-1, in menu 3-04: Midi Data, you have to set EXCLUSIVE=ENA. The VZ-1 will reset this option whenever you power off, so you have to enable it each time. I find this very annoying.
* Also on Menu 3, you probably want to disable Internal Memory protection, which also will be enabled after each power on.
* When I first hooked up my VZ to the computer, I was routing MIDI Data through a virtual Midi port. That didn't work with MidiQuest. So. for Midi-Quest, you might check to use the actual physical Midi-port to communicate with your synth.

With all this done, I can nicely edit the VZ, and more importantly use MidiQuest as a librarian for the hundreds of excellent free patches available for the synth.

Good luck!
Florian
