aaaah, fair enough!

I was just really interested about what this new synth could possibly be
that a whole bunch of people are talking about, and found it frustrating to
go to the website and find no real information at all.

It sounds like a very fun synth, but at US$1900, packing it up for a live
gig is something I don't have to worry about because I'm not about to buy
one....

Still very tempted by the machinedrum though... I got an xbase09 about 6
months ago now, and feel like it's not the drum machine for me. (too
stompy!) Maybe I'll sell it and put a bit more money up for a machinedrum...
the mp3 samples of their site have always sounded interesting....

XBase09 and Elektron MachineDrum are a fantastic couple. It is fun
making music with them, and for sure an eVolVer.

I had a machine drum but when it arrived the volume knob was broken .
So i mailed it back to the seller and got my money back. I have since
bought an esx-1 ( flame away ) and just feed it sample for all my drum
needs. I like it. One day I will consider getting a machinedrum again.
I just wish for the price it had a dead ringer 909 emulation.

If i may add something here.
I went the same route as ciscimanvann. I bought an MD
and worked with it for 3-4 months. The first one i received
had dust and a few scratches so i exchanged it (Elektron
did a good job on that).
Great UI, better sequencer
than i thought but i didn't fell in love with the sound.
Althought, it does sound precise and punchy it's not
what "I" (read: that's only MY opinion) was looking for.
However, keep in mind i'm not
in to electronic music, more in to rock-blues-punk with
the use of synths and some electro drums.

So i decided to go back to HD sampling.
I purchased the Esx-1 this week and so far it's
exactly waht i was looking for. I think the sound is way
more pro than the Es-1. I like the tubes, the way i can
work with the FX, motion sequence and the possibility of sequencing
both of my synths. The price is right too.
Only thing i don't like: no enough polyphony in stereo.

I used to have an RS700 from yamaha. Great machine,
i highly recommend. I prefer the Esx-1 just because it's
smaller, more user friendly and the price.

Yea, i know a lot of folks ( previously including myself ) whine about
not having precise control over the sounds of sample drums etc. This
is one area where i feel using samples gains me the most benifit. I
get to use pro produced drum samples and lay down my drum tracks
quickly. Alternativly I can sample any number of synth'ed drum sounds
from my evolver , monopoly etc and use those.
My only gripe with the esx-1 is that when you sample your own sounds
with the esx-1 they are very quiet and often unusable. In contrast it
has no problem playing back samples from my DAW.... I hear this will
be fixed in a software update shortly. Otherwise , I love it.

Re: [Evolver] Re: elektron products....

2003-12-15 by simon leclerc

I didn't try sampling directly from the Esx-1.
I,m sure mine has the same problem, i'm gonna try
to do a test this week.
I just loaded samples from smartmedia and it sounds normal.
But this 60% volume problem from the original source when
sampling is absolutly unacceptable.

Has someone tried to contact Korg's customer
support about this issue ?

Re: [Evolver] Re: elektron products....

I use an mpc2000xl as my main sequencer for live and studio, it drives my
synths via MIDI, and plays drum samples... so I know where you're coming
from with the sampled drumsounds side of things...

however I also want to have a decent flexible drum machine to run
alongside the mpc.... just as I like to have dedicated synth sequencers
runing alongside.... (like the evolver, for instance!!)

something about having different interfaces available makes a big
difference...

Re: elektron products....

just a quick question about the monomachine...
soo... it seems that one of the synthesis engines is called SID. I'm
assuming this is from the SID station... but there only seems to be 2
DSP chips in the monomachine. Does the monomachine actually have one
of the c64 sound chips in it as well, or is it just replicating the
SID synthesis engine... and if so, does it sound the same? I've
heard that one of the unique characteristics about the SID station
was all of the wacked out crosstalk noise, etc. that is inherent to
the chip. I always wanted a sid station, but never had the money...
hmmm... so, it's not like I really have the money for the mono
machine now ($1350?), but it would be nice to know they still make
something that could get those sounds...and much more... so,
eventually...

No SID chip inside, just a software reproduction.
Like Elektron said, the real spirit of the SID chip can't be
achieved by software. How much they are alike i can't tell you, I
never heard a real live SID station.

Ronald.

PS. What's about that anoying ''''''''''

yes! that is the great characteristic of the Sidstation (well, the SID
chip, actually); the noise!

the emulation on the Monomachine is very good. it does the basic SID
sounds very well. and by basic, I mean the waveforms and general
sound. it doesn't have nearly as much noise and rawness to it. also,
you can't do any wavetable programming of it (like the SID) and you
don't have the crazy interaction of LFO's. but if you want the basic
sound of a SID chip, then it's very good.

I actually use it a lot, and I hae a Sidstation. I prefer to leave the
Sidstation programming for those moments when I want very wacky SID
sounds.

oh, and there's also a SID mode for the MnM's arpeggiators, by the way.

Joe.

so basically, with the MM you can get probably tame SID sounds, but not the wacked
out ones as much?

basically, yes; the MnM's SID sound is relatively tame when compared
to the real thing.

if you haven't done so yet, you should check the www.monomachine.com
sounds page for the SID sounds.

Check out the esx-1 forum. Yes the 60% sux but someone from Korg has
assured the forum that it will be fixed in sofware update that should
be out anyday. I hope that is true or it will be on ebay sooooon.
Shame, i REALLY like it.

Re: elektron products....

As i mentioned before i own a SIDDI. Interesting to hear what the
mono does. I think one of the best features the sidstation has are
the 4 weird LFO´s and the Tables. If you want to make really sick
sounds those features are essential to the sidsound. Imagine the
Evolver without Lfo´s and Sequencer ;)

By the way - Programming Sounds on Evo is still soooooo much Fun ! i
wish i would have the money for a Poly - could i become a betatester
for a free unit ;)

I've got a minty fresh Roland S-760 w/ the opt board (gives it a nice
graphical UI on an external monitor or -- better yet -- via the TV in
on your fav video card) for sale atm. IMNSHO, it's one of the best
hardware samplers ever made.

Contact me if you'd like more info.
