Track with Evolver + old school amp remicing

Track with Evolver + old school amp remicing

2004-06-20 by Michael

(sorry if anyone on this list is also on the elektron list - crosspost)

ok - since I haven't posted any examples of tunes I've done with the evolver, I thought I'd
show this one off :D

did this with an old sears and roebuck tube amp (my guess is it's at least 50 years young,
give or take a decade) fed by a Machinedrum, a TR-505 fed trhough a metasonix TM-1,
and lots of cable noise

evolver did the weird 1/8th note melody through the track - please be careful as this is a
loud track!

the wretch - hope

enjoy!

I did! one of my favorite tracks that I've heard from
either list in a while... is that Metasonix box you're
using the new "Agonizer", or the older tube distortion
unit? either way, sounds like a nice (well, nasty in a
good sense) way to crunch sounds, especially drums.
I'll have to keep that in mind :)

great track!

cheers,
kevin

Thanks a bunch!

thanks ski :D

This is one of many tracks I'm putting together for an album - the
first album is streamable in its entirety on my label site:

http://www.magnatune.com/artists/wretch

There are also some other newer ones in beta stages, I'll take a look
and see if any are on topic (I know I used the evo in two of them,
need to backtrack and take a listen to the roughs and see where I've
stowed them)

thanks for listening :D

Nice! Glad you enjoyed it :D The Metasonix unit is the TM-1, it's a
ring mod/waveshaper - it's pure evil really. One of the toughest
things to find it's way into a track, but when it does find a place
it makes itself known! The tube amp is classy too - I mic'ed it with
an SM-57, and recorded several sessions with it with the Machinedrum
and the TR-505, and messed with it's "tone" knob, though tone is an
odd term to use for it - it was either really nasty treble feedback,
or chest thumping bass blast :P

Thanks for listening!

Thanks for listening :D
Overall:

All drums were the TR-505 and the Machinedrum, amped and dry.

Some were sliced in Phatmatik Pro in Logic, and processed with Ohmforce Quadfrohmage/
Airy's Speedster AU, plus alot of micro-editing and manual glitch edits. Lot's of
resampling, cutting, looping and more resampling.

Theres also a bassline somewhere in there done by Trilogy ;)

The speech samples are from a weird marketing video from the 50's on turntables - got it
from Archive.org

The pads are all from absynth, processed through Emagic Space designer.

I think that about covers it!

Michael,
Thanks. It's interesting. Actually one of the things I did like was
that pad like thing just before the talking sample. Was that the
Absynth pad? I use Absynth but I use Digital Performer so I don't
have Space Designer. What does it do? I recently discovered
Fromage and pretty much use it on everything. I wish I could use
Phatmatic but it's very buggy in DP.
If you think this is a bit off topic you could reply off list. anyways,
thanks for the reply.

Re: [Evolver] OT convolution reverbs was Track with Evolver + old school amp remicing

2004-06-24 by Alex

Sorry OT, but I’ve become a bit of a space designer evangelist. To keep it brief:
it’s a convolution reverb, of which there are several available now. Pioneered by
people like Sony (? or was it yamaha) 10-15 years ago, essentially involves sampling a
space by playing an impulse (short swept sine) into the room, recording the result and
then decovolving the sine wave and ending up with a sample of the reverb.

Great for running an unnatural sound into because they can be very natural sounding,
providing that tearing sense of contradiction we electronicists love. So, great for
the evolver. More details here:

<http://www.emagic.de/products/PRO/SP/reverb.php?lang=EN>

Other convolution based verbs are (iirc) voxengo pristine space, SIR and altiverb.

A great resource for ‘impulses’ (i.e. samples of spaces) - try the mercedes van for
boxy:

get spaced.

Re: [Evolver] OT convolution reverbs was Track with Evolver + old school amp remicing

Of course the best thing about convolution reverb is the ability to
use non-space oriented impulses as an effect for delays, flanging,
and other completely unique sound processing stuff. The pads in the
track in particular were run through an impulse from the Spectral
Relativity impulse library, which is pure insanity for sound
processing. at 90%wet, it really turns sounds into something
completely different from what they start as. Really brings new life
to sounds :D

And as a processor for evolver, well, it's phenomenal!
