re editors - Has anybody considered hounding the SoundQuest folks?

I spent some time on the phone with SoundQuest a few months back
about another synth that I have and the head of Sales there made it
real clear that they usually add to MIDI-Quests list of supported
products pretty much from buzz and noise....it seems to me that this
group is quite capable of generating such buzz and noise.

The core MIDI-Quest interface is already built and they "merely" have
to map the Evolver sysex and MIDI strings to their interface. I use
it for my other older stuff and I think the product represents a good
value given its long list of supported synths

The sales guy said the code development was pretty much a one person
operation and he worked on whatever seemed to be a good bet in adding
to their base....I'm guessing that there a lot of "active" Evolver
users as compared to say a Yamaha TX-81Z

What intrigues me about MIDI-Quest is that it supports all that other
old stuff I have, but for the Evolver I have to use yet another piece
of software else...I can't be the only person in this boat.

Here's the contact info for Soundquest, if you feel so inclined

Cool, I emailed them. Maybe if enough people do so, they'll be moved
to move.

In unrelated news, I finally bonded with my desktop Evolver last
night. I've had pie-in-the-sky dreams about making advanced looping
soundscapes. Of course, my programming chops need to be developed
for that. It hadn't occurred to me to use the Evo as a 'regular'
monosynth.

I slaved it to my Monomachine for clock, dialed in a basic 2 osc
analog patch, and HOLY CRAP, the sound about melted my speakers.
Then a friend came over, and he played the Mono while I put the Evo
in my lap and just tweaked like mad. We ended up with a skanky
celestial chainsaw chipmunk groove that was so full of timbre it was
almost pornographic.

Anyway, I get it now. Wow.

Sure!

Yeah, it was awesome. I'm even more excited to learn how to write

Hi Scott & Co.,

Psicraft is Sound Quest's strategic and development partner, and our
pending Vyzor Evolver editor is actually powered by Midi Quest
technology.

When Vyzor Evolver is released this December, it will also be
released to users of Midi Quest as an optional Instrument Module
expansion (the cost will be about half that of purchasing the single-
instrument Vyzor Evolver editor - Under $50 USD).

Best regards,

Tony Antoniou,

Psicraft Designs Inc.

We'll, there's 418 members of the Fizmo Yahoo! group, so I'm not sure
where the 100 number comes from ...

Oh, he was just afraid that we Fizmos would get our editor before the Evolver editor...

Yeah but how many of them actually have Fizmos? And how many of those Fizmos actually turn on?
(just kidding -- I have a Fizmo!)

How many Fizmo list members does it take to turn on a Fizmo? 20?

Re: [Evolver] re editors - Has anybody considered hounding the SoundQuest folks?

Hi Gene,

The Fizmo is definitely a weird & wonderful synth, and it would be
cool to create an editor for it... Vyzor Fizmo - Now there's a brand
name spelling that would send any self-respecting English teacher
into convulsions!

However, Psicraft's mandate is to work with living, breathing
hardware companies to create editors for new gear that is just being
introduced. Legacy gear from companies that are now part of larger
organizations is hard to get detailed SysEx info for - Usually the
original design team has been scattered to the 4 winds, and the docs
are incomplete. Likewise, any issues with the instrument's
functionality are impossible to have fixed on the hardware side
(which can kill the whole project if it's serious enough an issue).
Finally, Psicraft is left to promote the editor alone in cases like
this, since the manufacturer (if they still exist) usually have no
interest in promoting something that is out of production.

The only exception to this rule is legacy gear that has a large
established following and a solid SysEx implementation that can
support the kind of editor features we all expect from a plug-in
instrument GUI. Personally, I own a D-50, D-70, JP-8080 and a
Wavestation SR, which makes these instruments feasible for legacy
Vyzor editor support... That said, newer gear like the Evolver,
Virus, Andromeda A6, Ion, Micron and Line6 POD/PODxt lines are at
the head of the line for completion, so we'll have to get these out
first.

Best regards,

Tony

Ouch...when sounddiver completely dies then, the fizmo will lose some of its features. That's downright unfair :(

But, are you saying that if the sysex docs were possible to obtain that it would be worth considering? And if you owning one increases the odds, why then I'm sure a collection could be established among Fizmo owners who don't want the microtuning and other extra features to die out entirely.

God, this is maudlin, isn't it?

Tell you what...

If someone can send me a link to the Fizmo's SysEx docs, I will see
what can be done. Since the Fizmo is kind of O.T. here, please send
it privately.

I still don't know how we could justify the cost of buying a Fizmo
off eBay, however... On the other hand, squeezing a donation Fizmo
out of the Fizmo fan club feels kind of wrong to me too. Anyone with
ideas is welcome to send them privately to my email address, lest
this O.T. conversation continue in the Evolver forum.

Cheers,

Tony

NOTE: This email is not any kind of commitment to make a Fizmo
editor! I am only offering to look into the possibility. Thanks.
