Evolver problem - Freeze/loud noise

Evolver problem - Freeze/loud noise

2005-12-03 by Esef

Hi Everybody,
I got a new Evolver last week, version 3 was on it when i got it. I'm having a strange problem.
Every now and then i when i just have a sequence running i get loud white noise which
doesn't go away no matter what i do.
When i go to a different program the noise remains.
After power up everything is normal again.
I got no MIDI attached to the Evolver when this occurs.
This is scaring me, please help.
Many thanks
Es

There is a known issue in some 3.0 units that is easily fixed by updating the
operating system with a simple Sysex file. send an email to Dave Smith and he
will send you the file. It's a super easy fix.

cheers,

brian

Es,
I experienced the same thing once on my Evolver. I turned mine off and powered up and it went away. It hasn't happened again. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for replying. You're right! (i hope)
I emailed Dave and got that info plus the sysex file within an hour :-)
Still one small problem, my being old school i don't use a computer for music so i haven't
got a midi interface for my Mac.
I do have an MPC1000 but don't think you can load raw sysex in that...
I asked Dave if he has the fix in .mid format, if not i'll see if i can load it into the Evolver
somewhere else.

On that note, anybody know a good 1 in 1 out midi interface for a iMac G5 to comunicate
with my new blue friend :-)

Thanks,
Es

2005-12-03 by Esef

Cool, i'll look into that Motu interface Vibert1.
Okay, thanks to Dave Smith my problem seems to be solved!
Got a .mid file with the sysex to fix the problem.
loaded this into my Akai MPC1000 and played it into the Evolver at 30 BPM.
It went smooth.
So far no more 'noise crashes'.
Where do you get personal service like this, on a Saturday!
Thank you Dave

I have the same problem every now and then. Disconnecting the power
supply is the only way to get it working again. Maybe I should email
Dave as well ...

You got version 3.0?
Email Dave, he'll send you a sysex file which should solve it.

I had an LED problem with my PEK about a month after I got it. DSI
sent me a new circuit board very quickly and it's working fine now.
Their service is exceptional. Just wanted to plug their
responsiveness and quality service.

I had that same led prob. Dave sent me a new board, and I mailed back the old one.
Excellent service, nice guy. Makes me want to support him in DSI's future products.

RE: [Evolver] Re: Evolver problem - Freeze/loud noise

2005-12-05 by James Ghivizzani

I would like to add my praises to Dave. I had the problem with my evolver freezing up. I email him Sunday and within a hour I had the sysex file.
Yes on a Sunday, Man that's service! With support like this I can see a PEK in my future.

I guess there are many times where lack of manpower is a problem for a
company like DSI, but the complete lack of bureaucracy definitely helps!!

The other thing I love about DSI is a fundamental attitude of "first, trust
the users": if some simple hardware fix needs to be performed, he's more
than willing to just send out the parts and instruction for fixing it
yourself. Other, larger, companies _will_ do this for simple stuff like
chip swaps, but always seem to discourage it as much as possible -- it's
always "are you sure you want to do this, it will void your warranty!!!"
rather than DSI's "it's simple, give it a try."

This approach might not work for the typical mass market, but given a
sufficiently clueful user-base (which the Evolver community seems to be),
man it can be sooo much quicker and less hassle (for both parties) than
jerking around with "service centers" etc.

[DSI's stuff also seems well designed for easy servicing -- remove four
screws on the PEK and the front panel hinges up revealing all the boards in
convenient easily accessible locations; you don't have to take it off your
stand or even reach around the back...]
