desktop Evo wearing out?

desktop Evo wearing out?

2007-09-09 by dhamaryder

I sent this to just the general mail address at Dave Smith Instruments so I hope it gets to
him eventually. I thought I'd post what I sent in case somebody here had any ideas.

I just bought a Mono Evolver Keyboard and was comparing it to my Evo desktop which I've
had for years now. I've noticed that over the years some of my patches have changed
sound slightly(some more than slightly). It wasn't until I got the MEK that I really noticed
how significantly it(the desktop) has changed. I'd load up identical patches and the MEK
would be crystal clear but the desktop would not. Also, in many of the patches there has
developed a lot of noise with them(low white noise and some crackling). And some of my
sequence patches just don't sound the same at all when I compare them to recordings I
did more than three years ago. I wonder if the machine being on 24 hours a day for years
now has worn away some of the chips inside. I have already changed the processor chip
once(fairly recently). I don't think that's what it is. Could you suggest a course of action
for me? Thanks a lot.

Steve

Wow, Steve, I'm really not sure. Maybe something in the output
stage. Definitely some component or another is failing. I'm a
little surprised, too, as I haven't has a lick of trouble with my
original desktop Evo, though I'll admit I haven't left it on 24/7 for
years.

In any case, contacting Dave is the way to go. He sort of knows
these machines inside out. ;) He usually responds VERY quickly, but
I think he's just a bit behind on email right now because of the
hectic activities around the release of the P'08.

Holler back and let us know how it goes.

Re: update on desktop Evo wearing out?

I just heard from one one of the techs at DSI and he remembered having similar problems
with the analog part of the EVo, similar to what I described, when it wasn't getting enough
voltage(but the digital parts still worked fine). I tried switiching the MEK's power supply to
the desktop and problem solved! I guess just the power supply is worn out. I'm amazed.

Very interesting! Well, that's certainly a case where having an
*external* power supply was a blessing. It was easy to test, and
inexpensive to replace. Glad it worked out, Steve.
