Midi control to each oscilator on desktop evo?

Midi control to each oscilator on desktop evo?

2008-02-09 by sonofprent

Howdy,

Sorry if this has been asked before but is there a way of controlling
each oscilator by seperate midi channel on the desktop evo, ie c1 to
osc1, c2 - osc2 ect?
Cheers

I doubt it. Wouldn't make much sense.

Yes its possible . this guy describes how to convert MIDI notes to CC data using the NTCC
midi VST.
theres an mp3 demonstating the kind of thing you can do by controlling all 4 oscillators
independently.

Lovely job, thanks for your help I shall take a look here.
Im thinking this is a software work around and there's no way of doing
this via hardware midi sequencer?
I had visions of programming 64 step sequences for each oscilator via
monomachine with the 4 evo 16 step internal sequencers routed to
pulse/filter/fm and the like... would be very nice but after reading
manual/fidling Im not sure it can be done.
Maybe I'll have to go software....

Wow, that was amazing what he's done. nice job.

It should be possible if you can assign your sequencer to send CC data.
if youre intent on using hardware why not just use the evolvers own sequencer? you could
have a 64 part melody made of 4 programs. you'd have to sequence the program changes
though somehow.

yeah, my 1st thought was to use the evolver's own sequencer...

anyway, lots of hardware sequencers can be set up to sequence CC changes.
I use the Sequentix P3, and doing this is a breeze.

Re: Midi control to each oscilator on desktop evo?

2008-02-10 by robotunes

may i suggest the yamaha rm1x + paper + Pencil

before i sold my evo, i i drew a one octave keyboard on a sheet of
paper. below each white key and above each black key, i wrote the
key's midi note number. so a cm7 was no longer just c-d#-g-a#. it was
00-06-14-20. to raise the pitch an octave, i just added 24 to the
midi note number. soon i became adept at mentally playing my one-
octave paper keyboard and dialing up the notes in the sequencer.

if i ever have the pleasure of owning an evo again, i will program my
melodies for each osc into my rm1x. It thinks of a pattern
as having 16 different sections, each section with a different
pattern length if i want. so i could have a 4-bar section A, a 16-bar
section B, a 64-bar section C and so forth. now, press play, then
press the section that i want to play -- in any order. A-C-C-B, for
instance.

that's what i plan to do when i get another evolver. i upgraded my
desktop evolver only to ver 2.0 before i sold it. if i get another
evolver (i'm debating between the MEK, a radias and a monomachine --
the latter two not for their sounds but for what they can do to
external gear such as my jp-6), i plan to use the method i just
described to trigger the MEK's pitches while its internal sequencers
modulate other parameters. should be awesome.

does this sound like a solution for you?

Yup! Its funny I figured out a similar thing last night: routing the
mono to control midi control osc pitch on osc 1 - 4. You can the
parameter lock each step in a sequence to a different pitch on the
evo's oscilators. I havent tried it yet or got as far as transcribing
the note numbers but it sounds like thats what you did with the rm1x.
Will give it a go today, thanks for the help.

As for your hardware predicament I personally havent looked back after
getting the monomachine, its an amazing synth- if decide to get one
and you get the chance go for the sfx6, the interface is close to
perfect.

Cheers!

why do you want them on separate midi channel? they can be controlled with separate CC# number but on the same channel..
peace..

Cheers Peter, I got that far.
Ive just been looking into different ways of using the machine as Im
not sure Im getting enough out of it at the minute... maybe time for a
change.

Re: [Evolver] Midi control to each oscilator on desktop evo?

it actually makes quite a bit of sense if you're looking for a way to
use a sequencer to track the pitch of each osc, or if you just want to
play each osc's pitch independently via a keyboard.

i use tobybear's N2CC midi VST plug-in to do this. with 4 instances of
N2CC, you can control all four oscillators independently. you just
have to send a sustained note-on to the evo to get the synth engine
running. it also makes life easier if you have each oscillator's
level set to a fader or knob on your controller... so you can quickly
mute/solo each osc.

it's not like you have 4 evo's this way, since all voices are going
through the same synth routing. but it's cool, nonetheless.

any host that can run *midi* vst plugs should work.
