Re: [Evolver] simple guitar env filter patch

Re: [Evolver] simple guitar env filter patch

2003-04-19 by Craig Wiper

I wrote to the group a while back asking for a good way to use the Evolver as an audio (guitar) processor, and got no response. I would love to find out how to get the thing to trigger and process my guitar audio signal easily. I've been having a heck of a time trying to get it to respond and process the guitar.
So, I'd also be interested in finding audio/filter patches, techniques.
Best regards,
Craig

I am having a hard time getting a decent envelope filter sound out of
my evolver when processing my guitar. Does anyone have a decent patch
that shows this? I could not find any that quite did what i was
thinking on the unit already ( pfunk , etc )
Thanks

Sorry guys. If I had a guitar, I'd give it a shot and send you a
patch.

Are you using the Input Gain to tailor the response? Are you
comfortable and experienced with programming analog subtractive
synths?

It's kind of hard to tell exactly what your trouble might be based on
your rather generic descriptions (such as, "I've been having a heck
of a time trying to get it to respond and process the guitar." and "I
could not find any that quite did what i was thinking on the unit
already.").

Anyone else here a guitar player that's using the Evolver as an
effects box?

This has to be cool for a guitar! Among other things, I can just
imagine programming the sequencer to step through different filter
values, feedback frequencies, amplitude modulation, etc. for a unique
guitar sound.

Hi All,

I've uploaded two patches using the envelope follower as a mod
source. The first is an envelope filter filter. The second is an
envelope flanger.

Check them out and see if they (along with Ski's tips) work as a
starting point.

Re: [Evolver] simple guitar env filter patch

2003-04-20 by Craig Wiper

Hi Ski. Mainly, I can't seem to get the 'audio' signal of my guitar to pass through the Evolver. I can get the guitar to 'trigger' things. I just can't figure out how to route the actual audio signal so I can hear, say, it being modified by the filter.
My programming experience is strictly 'patch cord' driven. I built a huge PAIA system back in the '70's, full of patch cables, etc. It was easy to plug in an audio source, and route it via cables through the system and have it come out the other end. With the Evolver being 'push-button' and 'led' driven, it's much harder to 'see' how the signal and patches are routed, hence my dilemma.
So, just where do I 'find' my guitar's audio signal if I have it plugged into 'Left In'? Which parameter setting can take 'that' audio signal and route it, for starters, through the 'filter'? I've had great luck using the Oscillators as sound sources. I just can't figure out how to 'tap in' to the external audio signal and use it for processing.
Does this make sense?
Thanks a bunch for your help.

Re: simple guitar env filter patch

2003-04-20 by z_flash_ram

Hi Craig,
Assuming you understand the Evolver's various triggering options
(Manual 1.0 Page 26) 'Trigger Select', or the good old 'VCA Level' =
100 trick:

With guitar cable into 'Left In',
Turn down all OSCs/LFOs/etc and open the filter cutoff to max.
Raise 'Volume' to 100.
Set 'Ext In Mode' to "L".
Raise 'Ext In Vol' to 100.
Adjust 'Input Gain' accordingly.
You should hear something.
Adjust desired parameters accordingly.

I just sent an un-amped bass guitar into Evolver this way and it
worked for me.
Don't forget about the Distortions, Input Hack, or the 'In Peak Amt'
and 'Env Fol Amt' mod sources!

Have fun,
Chris

Hi Craig,

Were they not corrrupted, they would load into bank 1, patch 128.

I'll re-dump and re-upload today. Sorry. :(
