What about the other option - use a "standard" acoustic kick pad over 
the Yamaha pad, to save it from wear? Depending on how thick it is, 
you may have to increase the sensitivity a tad.

I've only had my DTXpressII for about six weeks, and my brand new 
felt beaters are also black.
