Newbie question!

Newbie question!

2005-09-25 by Mirko

Hello group!
This is my first post as I have just bought the DTX III SE.
I'm not very experienced in midi setup, so here's my issue...
I want to connect the edrums to my pc and use them in cubese.
So I'll use a midi cable right? Haven't tried yet but I was thinking
about the playback. I know I can send midi notes to cubase and then my
pc will play whatever sample I assign (e.g. NI Battery).
But what do I need to do if I want to record a midi track and then hear
my pc play the DTX kits? I don't want to use the audio stereo outputs
as I want to be able to edit my drum tracks afterwards and also keep my
drum sounds separated on each track...
I hope you understand my bad english. ^__^
And thank you guys.

Hi Mirko,

Welcome to the group. If you want your sequencer to play DTX sounds,
you have to program it with DTX MIDI note numbers (or actually hit
the pads) via MIDI OUT from DTX to MIDI IN to your PC/Cubase and play
them back through the DTX module's tone generator via MIDI OUT from
your PC and IN to DTX. If you want to hear what you've programmed,
you have to play it through the DTX audio outs, either speakers or
headphones. Because nothing on your PC can generate DTX drum tones,
you can't hear them unless the DTXpress actually plays them; the DTX
drumkit note numbers will not produce what you intended if played
back through Battery or any other MIDI program. Playback isn't a
function of MIDI, only of audio. You can, however, assign each MIDI
drum note to its own channel (1-16) in the DTX menu system, even if
you listen to all of the notes together as stereo audio. After you've
recorded your DTX drums to Cubase with the appropriate note numbers,
you can edit the results to your heart's content on Cubase.

I've assumed so far that you're recording specific kits on Cubase for
playback on the DTX. But you can also use the DTXpress as a pure
tone generator to access General MIDI (GM) sounds (everthing from
basoon to xylophone), including drums, so that you can play back a
wide range of sequenced notes through the DTXpress tone generator.
The MIDI note numbers for General MIDI purposes are at the back of
the DTXpress manual somewhere. Using this function requires special
set up. Consult the manual and/or dtxpressions.com, or search the
group archives for information about how to access the GM sounds.

Thanx a lot emf! (btw is EMF that band of the 90's??)
Anyway, I definetely got the "logic" of the midi setup.
Now it's also time to learn how to play drums!! :)

Mirko,

Yes, a band called EMF seems to have haunted the 90s for a brief
moment. However, I prefer to be associated with electro magnetic
force, which is probably the derivation of the band's name. Actually,
emf are my initials. I switched to them a couple of years ago when
someone asked one of the other moderators whether my original handle
of liberatusvirus (the literal Latin translation of my last name)
signified a computer virus. I may be a virus, but I'm not that kind
of virus--I don't think.

Itwould be like "free virus" or "freed virus" I guess. I'm
italian...so maybe latin is not much of a dead language for me ;-)

Anyway, going back to In Topic stuff:
is there a way to dump DTX kits onto computer for sampler use?
Or maybe, are the kit available on the web?
I know I can find even better kits on the web, but some of DTX built-
in kits are really cool for me.
Thank you emf.

We have a program called dtxchange at dtxpressions.com that permits
data from the DTXpress to be stored on a PC. However, the format for
the DTXpress is not accessible to, or authorized for, samplers.
However, there are so many very good percussion sampling packages
available now that Yamaha's sounds could hardly be missed. Some are
expensive, and some not. The recently released disk with Clavia's
cleaned up ddrum samples, to my mind, would be worth a little money,
for example, though maybe not to everyone.
