Pads compatible to DTXpress 2

Pads compatible to DTXpress 2

2006-10-16 by Flynn

Hello to all of you,

I wanna know if all of the available pads and cymbals available out
there are all compatible with the DTXpress 2.

I'm thinking of hardware like the RHH-130 HiHat and the Pads usually
used with DTXtreme, like the TP-120S.

In general: Are all of the available Yamaha Pads on the market
compatible with a DTXpress 2?

And how about other Pads? I saw in the photos-section some kits with
Visulite cymbals. Are those compatible from the beginning or do you
have to modify them to make then compatible?

And what about the Roland E-Cymbals like the CY-5 HiHat Cymbal-Pad.
Has anyone already used Roland Pads with the DTXpress? Would this be
possible or would you have to build some kind of adapter for the
wiring or are the FSRs and piezos so different that you can't use them
with a DTXpress?

Thanks a lot, thanks in progress,
Best Regards,
Flynn

Flynn,

As far as I know, all Yamaha pads are compatible with the DTXpress.
The DTXpress II has settings for the RHH130 even though it wasn't
available at the time, and is part of the DTXpress III Special kit
anyway. The TP100/TP120 will work fine, but the red knob will not do
anything (it can control the snare effect on the DTXtreme). You will
get all three zones. The volume control on the TP100/TP120 will work.
All the Yamaha cymbals will work.

Other manufacturers pads may cause problems of too much or too little
signal, although there are plenty of things to play with to try to
sort that out - the attenuator switch, trigger type and gains.

Someone recently posted here about good results with a Roland Hi-Hat I
think - try searching the archives.

I have tried a Roland mesh pad (single zone tom pad) on my DTXpress
and it worked fine (only a brief test on one I borrowed). The Pintech
Concertcast works fine as well, but the dual zone one uses two piezos
so either needs two inputs or an adaptor (see "magic box" or "DTXpander").

In general, all pads use piezos. The differences are how much signal
you get and also how well damped they are. A pad which "rings"
considerably may give double triggering which would need some tweeking
of parameters to sort out (e.g. the self rejection). Also, some
manufacturers pads use two piezos for dual zone rather than one piezo
and FSR. They require two inputs or the aforementioned magic box.
The polarity could be important - the Yamaha modules seem to like a
positive pulse, although with most pads you get some ringing so get
both anyway. A well damped negative pulse may not work very well, but
it is not something I have explored in any depth.

Keith.

On my dtxpress 2 I use a tp100 for snare, a pcy150s for ride, a
pcy130s for crash and a roland cy5 for hihat. The roland took some
poking around with the settings, but It now works great....

I tried the roland as a crash too, it worked but i couldn't get it to
choke.

The tp100 is essentially the same as a tp120 so there shouldn't be a
problem.

good luck

Tom

Thank you a lot for your answers to my questions, that's all I wanted to
know as I consider getting another snare perhaps and I'd like to use some of
those round cymbals. As the Roland CY-5 came into my mind I thought of
asking here (I want to use it as HiHat as well).

Thank you,
Best Regards,
Flynn

See message number 12524 titled "Roland CY-5 as a hihat -- It works!!!"

I'm the guy that got the CY-5 to work on my DTXpress III kit. A few
months later, it is still working fine. The only slight complaint I
have about it is that like the Yamaha cymbals, the piezo is up by the
bell, far away from the playing surface. That isn't an issue at all
wiwhen playing the bow of the cymbal, but when playing the edge of the
CY-5 (when you would normally do accents), then hits don't register as
hard. It is really nice that the separate edge sounds do work (as
does the choking capability), but an adjustment in my playing
technique (a relative term, since I'm a newbie to a full-size kit)was
in order. I will get the occasional mis-choked note, but they are few
and far between.

Overall, I've been really pleased with that addition to the kit. The
CY-5 is so much more playable than an tom pad as a hihat. You may
need to be a bit creative in mounting. I cut up a spare arm from one
of my old Ultimate Support keyboard stands to raise it up to a more
natural position. I'll try to post a picture tonight of my mounting
job so you can see how it looks.

If you can find a good price on the CY-5 and a clamp/L-mount, it is
definitely worth it.

Good luck!

Lito

Re: Pads compatible to DTXpress 2

Okay, I loaded a couple of pictures in a new album called "CY-5 on a
DTXpress III". To raise the CY-5 to a more comfortable position, I
used a Tama T-fitting on the same tube as the snare. To that I
mounted an Ultimate Support female/female locking swivel joint. I
also had a male/female swivel joint, but by using about 3" of tubing
on one female side, I was able to raise it higher over the rack's
snare tube. On the other end of the swivel joint, set to a 90-degree
angle, I affixed the Roland L-clamp.

I already had the Tama, USS hardware, and extra tubing from all the
old A-frame keyboard stands I've had collecting dust in the garage
over the years. But if you decide to do it like I did, you should be
able to find equivalent parts at the local music store.

Be sure to let us know what you think of the CY-5 when you add it!
