Room isolation

Room isolation

2008-08-23 by irishcpc

Hi all
I live in an apartment (condominium) and my neighbors, specially the
one under my floor, claim that they hear noises when I play my DTX.
Really they are very sensible... I only use earphones. So the sound is
only the pads, no loudspeaker. Has anybody done some kind of accoustic
isolation in their rooms that can help me with ideas.
Carlos

I think it is a common problem and is usually caused by the kick. One
solution is to suspend the kit and yourself on a wooden platform
isolated with tennis balls. It sounds rather a big job, so I don't
know if there are any alternatives which may just isolate the kick
(assuming that is the only problem). If you are friendly with the
neighbours it would be worthwhile trying to find out if it is just the
kick that's the problem.

Hi Carlos
I don't live above anybody, but I have heard that the kick drum and pedal and the rack contact with the floor are the culprits for your neighbors hearing problem. lol!

There is a tennis ball solution that you can build;

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/wL2xSAV4WMiis5xiMtXBg0wo2yHyIXDjkIaSptlr4smsa17kETDQa2YCDmWTHJf6t7BRjKIjTHfZ4ob51w0/tennisballisolation.pdf
it is called...
tennisballisolation.pdf in the files section of the group
(this is a construction "how to" for a tennis ball drum isolation platform)

Also there is the possibility of putting a rubber or foam pad under your drum kit as a temporary solution...or try it and see!

You may also be able get some of those acoustic foam panels off ebay and glue them to a piece of plywood and lay it foam down to get a similar effect!

Hope that helps!
Tom

Tom,

That link doesn't work for me, but the "tennisballisolation.pdf" file
is in this group in the files section so maybe Carlos can find it there.
