I've owned both the Roland V-Club and the DTX.
Buy the Roland.

Subject: [DTXpress] About to buy, need advice..........

Hey Guys,

I have drummed before. My brother is a pro drummer and is going to
teach me. I have been playing guitar, keys and bass for years and
have been doing home recording with Cakewalk for about 6 years. ;

I know it is going to take time to pick up the drums, but I am
confident I can do it.

Here is my question. Of the digital drumsets on the market right
now, in the under $1500 neighborhood, which do you all think is the
best for this application?

From what I have been able to read in this forum and others, I am
leaning towards the DTXPress II.

I would like to know what those of you who've been using them have
to say.

Thanks

Hey clerk! I just came off of a six year lay off from drums when I
bought my DTXpressII on dec 30th. I went electronic because it fits
my living situation, can use them anytime, connect to my computer,
record easily, hook up some headphones to them, PLENTY of sounds,
midi stuff is available, etc. The DTXII is an excellent entry set
in my opinion. When I first tried them out at the store I was
impressed by how real they sounded. Granted not ALL the sounds are
super realistic but for the most part most of them are. I know
people also talk about the roland v-clubs but I have never tried
those out so I can't speak for them. Basically, for the price, its
hard to beat the DTXII. I would highly recommend trying out some
sets at your music shop first!

Hi,

You can get a lot of good stuff for under $1500. You might check out
Drumbalaya's site (http://www.drumbalaya.com/). Ed Morin lists a
bunch of kits that he's put together at different price points--one
of them being $1500 and under. The DTXpress II is certainly a viable
option. But you could also get a Hart kit with either the DTXPIIU or
Roland TD6 module and still come in well under $1500. A Pintech
ConcertCast set with the Yamaha or Roland module is also worth
serious consideration. As far as bang for the buck is concerned,
most of the people in this group will tell you that the DTXpress is
unbeatable, but with a little financial wiggle room, you can afford
to entertain a few more choices, such as whether to get gum-rubber
or mesh-head pads or whether to mix and match cymbals. Ed at
Drumbalaya will give you the benefit of his expertise by email or on
the phone. MIDI is MIDI. The real questions are how much do you want
to spend and how do you want your kit to play. One thing's for sure:
You're going to have a blast.
