After owning an accoustic drum set I couldnt play, because I own a
small condo, I purchased my DTXpress II on january 28,2003. On
January 29, 2003 I got my first bang on the door at 8:30pm. Yep, its
my drunk old nasty lady neighbor, also President of the home owners
ASSociation. She told me to knock it off, I said well what time is
good for you? She replied days. Mind you I work and she is milking
the state, so I reply "Yeah thats gonna happen." "Atleast your being
realistic about this!" with just a touch of sarcasm. So she agrees
to me stopping by 8:00pm. Done I said! I was so excited, at the deal
I got. Only to find out it was a deal with the devil. Last night
3/9/03, I got the same door banging. I open it up and guess who?
Yeah that her the %#@t. She tell me "thats it!" I am done with the
drums. I said well whats that supposed to mean? She says you got a
letter telling you to quit playing the drums. I only pick up my mai
every 2 weeks, so its still in my mailbox at this point. I tell her
so, then words are exchanged and threats of fines, I tell him ill
still be playin em , she closing with the ever popular, then "Ill
just call the flippin cops". I tell her sound good. So as of now I
am officially moving. I live in Northern California, so its not a
small price tag to buy a new place. Sorry to babble but I actually
have a couple of questions for all who read through this.
First, Those of you with similar experiences please let me know what
I can do?
Second, I definately see a need for "drummer relocation insurance"
Third, Its killing me not to play and its only been 24 hours!

I have had the same problem... they were knocking on the walls
because of the sound of sticks hitting the pads.

I suggest you get a fat carpet and put under the set... it will
reduce the sounds (vibrations) of the kicktower and the whole rack.
Another thing i did was to buy a pair of really thin sticks(b-stick
i think they are called). They barely sound anything at all... the
problem is that if you do ghost notes with them they doesnt always
trigger, but maybe that can be fixed.

My problems with neighbours almost dissapeared after that, but in
the same time some idiot on the top floor had been playing with
plumbing so there was water flowing all the way down to me(bottom
floor) resulting in major problems for all the apartments... so i
guess they all started to hate him instead of me . So try to get the
focus on some other idiot in the house , they just someone to
complain at anyway.. doesnt matter who :=) And buy thin sticks and a
fat carpet or some rubber to put under the set. I have heard that
there are something ( like sound isolating room inside the room )
that you can buy too, then ít will be totally quiet but i guess it
cost a lot.

good luck

Re: [DTXpress] Re: This might be a first for this group....

2003-03-10 by Vernon Graner

A few things to try:

1. Isolate the ENTIRE set from it's surroundings. This can be done by
purchasing a sheet of plywood and some large "super" balls (solid rubber
balls kids play with). Cut the balls in half and place them under the
sheet of plywood. Cover the plywood with thick carpet pad and some
carpet. This should effectively isolate the kit from the floor. This is
assuming the floor is wooden (pier/beam) and is transferring the sound to
the surrounding apartments.

2. Put the kit in the room furthest from the tennant who complains.
Possibly in a room that has an outside wall. If at all possible, you
could furthor isolate the room from the stick/pad sound by placing
egg-crate type foam rubber on the walls. They sell large sheets of the
stuff at bedding stores for low $$$. Many times, hospitals use the stuff
for padding beds after surgical processes and they throw a bunch of it
away. Find a nurse and or surgical tech and ask if they have some spare.

3. Play with the lightest sticks you can find. I know this may be the
hardest thing to do because it can affect your playing style, but it
makes the least noise, and in my opinion, can also improve your speed and
accuracy. :)

4. Go to you tennant association meetings and PARTICIPATE! I don't mean
just show up when you are summoned, I mean go and play an active role!
Run for office! Why shouldn't *you* be the homeowner association
president? If you were the president, the roles would be reversed! I also
suggest that you work WITH the b*tchy person and see if you can find a
way to get the sound down to a level they can live with. Explain that for
you its the same as watching TV or dancing. If you were a tap-dancer for
a living you would have to practive your craft. show them the lengths you
are willing to go to to try and reduce the intrusion into their
environment. OF course, if the person is still unreasonable, you may also
try complaining about the level of their television to the cops b4 they
call them on you! ;)

Hope some of this helps..... :)

There are some people that you just can't please. That is what the law is for. There is a noise ordinance law. Find out what it is. In my city you can have fairly loud music until 10pm. That is the cutoff. If it was me I would get a copy of the ordnance and give it to the old biddy. Then I would tell her I don't need to please her, I just need to follow the letter of the law and if she persists in bugging me I would tell her that I will file a lawsuit for harassment.

Yuck! Someone might have died on that foam!

Be sure not to light off the pyros.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I read a while back on vdrums.com, some guy had the
same experience, and he bought a heavy duty foam to
set under his drums, I think he even built a small
riser and lined it w/styrofoam insulating pieces.
Here's an email to this group i have sent, with your
name from vdrums.com...hope it makes it to this forum

Re: This might be a first for this group....

All very good ideas for sound insulation. However I have been
informed that no more drumming will be tolerated. And at $100.00 per
infraction, I cant afford to continue playing even if I could cut
the noise down 75%. There was a previous post that put it best "You
just cant please some people." She gets off on making me stop
playing, its like a power trip. I could have my case heard by the
board, however it is comprised of her and her 3 other jobless old
ladies. Resistance is futile! They are the type that wants to ban
everything including fun itself. Just like Burger Mister Mister
Burger. Flat out....Its time for me to go, the drums just pushed the
date forward a little. I have called my realitor and will seek a
peaceful solution for us both. I am selling my piece of s%#t condo
with attached walls. I will buy a place with a garage next and I
wont be attached to my neighbor so I wont have to worry about it. So
for all of you for whom its not too late, I urge you to follow some
of these methods for sound insulation. It will really save you with
your neighbors when it comes to drumming.
