What kind of headphones are you using?

What kind of headphones are you using?

2003-04-20 by underneathheaven

Hey guys, I was wondering what your choices were in headphones for
listening to your electronic kit? Right now I'm using a pair of
Grado SR225 which I've had for a couple of years I guess, but the
left speaker has just now started to distort the bass sounds.
They're a $200.00 pair of headphones, I love headphones and use them
all the time, thats why I paid such a price and they sound really
good. But now it seems I may be in need of a quick replacement
because I can't afford another pair at the moment. So what are my
choices as far as a good sounding pair of headphones? I use my
stereo as my sound source for my dtxpress so I'm looking at some
good stereo type. Do you guys think maybe I could get the left
speaker fixed somewhere? Please let me know!! Thanks!!

I use Sennheiser DH 25-13 headphones. They actually belong to my
stepson, a deejay. They keep all the exterior noise out and retail in
Australia for $475.

Im using a set of Technics RP-F290 headphones, they are a nice
set of headphones,a bit low on the mid range but overall not too bad.

UN.H
Hi, Un
I am using a $15 pair of Discwashers. They work great. The volume is
very good, and frequency response covers the full range of the kit.
They are not here right now, so I don't know the exact model, but you
don't need to spend a lot of $$.Make sure you get the full cup ear
coverage, and a low impedence,(how low? I don't know, just compare.)

P.S.
I have used this pair for four years, in studio and on-stage to
monitor sequences and clicks, and full monitor, and they still
function beautifully!

Re: What kind of headphones are you using?

2003-04-26 by Nick Carroll

Hey, UN.H. This is just a P.S. to my reply regarding headphones. My
stepson, who works as a DJ and uses the Sennheiser HD-25s, has moved
out of home and taken them with him. Luckily he is also store
manager at a music retailer and managed to get me a pair for $500
Australian, which is about $US300. The price I quoted previously
($475 Australian) is actually the wholesale value. Nathan tells me
he would normally sell a pair for $800 ($US480). That might sound a
lot to pay but these headphones are top of the range, and I'm
wondering what sound quality you are getting out of your very much
cheaper phones. If you are looking to buy a new pair, I'd recommend
you take a listen through the Sennheisers. You might be amazed at
how much better they sound than what you are accustomed to.

Hey Nick, thanks for the info! The place where I bought my Grado
pair also sells Sennheisers and I'm really starting to look into
them just to try another brand. I'm also impressed with how much
you like them so I guess I'll give em a shot. I need a pair of
headphones that can take cranked volume and not distort bass but at
the same time give me pretty highs and mids.

Re: What kind of headphones are you using?

I vote for Sennheiser too. I have four of them:
1) HD-600: This is top of the line stuff. Too precious to use with
DTX, I only use it for serious listening.
2) HD-280 pro: Very *very* good for closed monitoring. I usually use
these with my DTX.
3) HD-497: Cheaper but still great. I initially bought it for casual
listening, but if I get too claustrophobic with HD-280, I switch to
these on DTX.
4) MX-400: Very cheap earbuds for my office and surprisingly good.

Note that there are many factors you need to be aware of when
choosing headphones (open/closed, impedance, etc). I suggest you to
check out www.headphone.com for a lot of info.

Re: What kind of headphones are you using?

No headphones could be too precious to use with the DTXpress! If I'm
playing the drums, I want to hear 'em like an audience would hear
them. And, UN.H, you can rest assured that expensive Sennheisers will
let you play as loud as you like without distorting AND give you the
delicate tones as well.
