Steward and Creighton,

The Pintech Zenbal is a stereo cymbal (and a good one).

I'm thinking it's stereo since it's chokeable which usually means the rim has an FSR (Force Sensitive Resistor?). I have one UPSing to me as we speak from the good folk at Drumbalaya. When it comes and I get it to work- will be back to share.

Since it seems to have been fairly comprehensively demonstrated that
I am mentally two lugs short of a complete set, can someone tell me

Hey Ed
Got your mail after visiting a thread at V-drums.com which trashed the Zenbals. Now I'm feeling insecure! And to think I sold a child to buy this. (it was the ugly one)
Have you run a ZB-2 through a DTX? Any tricks to setup?

Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by liberatusvirus

Creighton,

Do you remember who trashed it on Vdrum? Well, you definitely can't
please all of the people all of the time (especially everyone at the
Roland site), but my experience, and that of very many others, with
the ZB2 is very favorable. I don't mean to diminish it by saying
that I don't have it anymore (I've gone exclusively to Visu-lite);
of all the stereo cymbals that I've tried, I rate it easily the
highest. I think of reliability for the stereos on two fronts: (1)
the probability that it will make any sound when you hit it and (2)
the probability that it will provide the expected sound when you hit
it. For me, the Zenbal almost never failed to sound, and it rarely
failed to make the sound I expected. It also swings, unlike the
similarly priced Roland CY-6 or obviously the Yamahas. By the way, I
also owned a CY-6, which I found to be mediocre. When I sold it,
however, VDrum people crawled out of the woodwork to buy it. So go
figure. Roland people have this weird love/hate loyalty to their
company. They trash the products like crazy, but many of them won't
budge from them.

I don't remember any particular glitches in programming it, but
Stephen, who has come to love his, reported that it took some time
to get them adjusted to the DTX module. I liked it better as two
crashes than as a ride, because of its layout. But I would truly be
surprised if any former Yamaha owner, who came to it, wasn't
impressed.

I'm kicking myself because I sold my Zenbal, as well as CY-6, to
members of Vdrum.com. I'd much prefer to sell within this group, but
at the time, no one here was interested.

Ed

Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by liberatusvirus

The subject piqued my curiosity so I went and checked out the thread
on vdrum. It's basically two people who reported being really
unhappy, though one started out differently. Chris Jude, whose
opinion I respect immensely, reports that he's heard more bad than
good, though he appears not to have had firsthand experience. In the
interests of fair play, if any cymbal is going to get its share of
criticism, it would be a stereo, and that seems to be the case at
vdrum. The relative location of the triggers makes them more prone
than monos or duals to disappoint. They put more of a strain on
technique and attention to detail. I will also admit that so far as
basic types of e-cymbal are concerned, my least favorite design is
the stereos, but they have advantages of budget and space that the
others don't, and, as I said, to me the Zenbal is superior to the
alternatives that I know.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by Creighton Higgins

Ed
Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree with the your assessment of stereo devices. One of my issues with edrums is dynamic range: once you tailor the system to reject crosstalk and adjust gain, etc., it seems that one's loudness range is limited. The edge switch on stereo pads is just that- a switch- so there is no way to play that part of the pad soft or loud- it just triggers. The edge of my Yamaha failed but the piezo still triggers, so I expect to end up with 2 mono cymbals, and the stereo Zenbal. I'm thinking that the old PCY will go to input 9 or 10 through a splitter. This sound right to you?
It seems to me that there are so many variables between pad design and the various modules that it is hard to find "the truth" about a product. Over and over I see posts where someone says they hate something, and a few days later they like it once it's dialed in. Go figure.
thanks

Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

Creighton:

I have two ZB2, and am anxiously awaiting the release of the ZB2
Hihat. I also plan to replace a TPS80S that I use as a ride cymbal
with a ZB2. There may even be a ZB Splash in my future.

Ed mentioned that I had trouble setting them up. That was no fault of
the cymbal. That was my naivete' in understanding pad type
assignments. Once I was educated to that (thanks to this forum), the
cymbals performed with greater than expected results. I do have one
cymbal that the rim area is malfunctioning on, but Brian at Pintech
is doing his best to resolve that issue.

I, too, tried the CY-6 I didn't care for it AT ALL! I had some of the
single zone Hart e-cymbals but didn't like the fact that they were
single zone and non-chokable. (I do believe Hart makes a dual zone
chokable cymbal, though.) I also didn't like the Harts because they
looked ike 'real' cymbals, which would be okay if my drums looked
like 'real' drums. Does that make sense?

Go with the Zenbals, you'll be pleased.

Creighton,

I know what you mean. Compromises abound in the e-drum world, but
the upside is definitely worth them. Your newly morphed mono PCY can
go into 9/10, but of course you'll only need a TRS splitter to
insert it if you're putting another mono in there, too. We look
forward to your experience with the ZB2.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by Creighton Higgins

Thanks Stephen
Seems like Pintech has a lifetime warranty. Perhaps they need to replace your cymbal?
I am looking forward to trying the surface of the Zenbal. My carpal tunnel has been fierce and I suspect much of it has to do with playing ride patterns on hard rubber surfaces. I'm hoping for some relief with the Zenbal as an added benefit.
This group is so useful.

Here I am, risking looking a complete twit again. However, the sun is
not out and it's been raining, so hopefully my brain is cooler than
yesterday.

Since the switch just modifies the sound produced by the brain in
response to the piezo, rather than resulting in a sound on its own,
that should not be true, should it? You should still get all the
dynamics of the piezo, but with a different sound due to the switch
being closed too. It seems to be backed up by my (admittedly limited)
testing.

Creighton,

Have you been using a TP pad for your ride? For some people
(depending on their technique and the force of their hits), even
using them as drums can wreak havoc with their joints and muscles.
With all due respect to your ingenuity, if you start noticing any
numbness or sensitivity in your foot from beating on that hard Remo
pracice kick, you'll have to soften that blow, too. Or have you
place a mouse pad over it?

Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by liberatusvirus

Stewart,

Right. The voice triggered by the rim switch has all of the same
qualities of the primary voice. The problem is not that no control
is possible, only that no separate control is possible. For
instance, you may not want the rim crash to have the same voice and
triggering characteristics as your light ride, but nothing can be
done about it, short of buying another cymbal.

What I should have said is that the triggering characteristics are
shared, not the voice characteristics. Gain and min. velocity might
not be suitable matches for the voices chosen. The rejection
parameters don't matter.

Creighton,

It's settled. We're going to have to find a way to get you a mesh

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Pintechs - dual or stereo?

2003-05-02 by Creighton Higgins

Ed,
I'm not sure what a TP pad is, but if it will help, I want one. I've found the Remo pad is actually gentler than the hard rubber block on my old kick tower.
I have been trying the new Zildian energy absorbing sticks this week, but I can't really report any relief from them. I'm cursed with a 20-year-old mentality in a 50-year-old body. Cripes

Ed

Darn. I was considering some of those. What I have done is to go down
a couple of stick sizes. I have a pair of sticks just bearing the
legend "JAZZ" - no maker or size - that I picked up from the remnants
bin. They look like sort of 8D size. I hardly use my "usual" 5As any
more.

I know what you mean. Coupled, in my case, with a physique like a
trash sack full of yoghurt.

Creighton:

I started playing the DTX a little over a year ago. After 34 years of
continuous playing without any joint problems, I started to get a
pain in my left elbow. I suspected it was either CTS or just bruising
from the sheer shock of slamming a stick on the TP snare. In
February, I switched over to Pintech mesh-headed drums and the pain
is all but absent. I also switched to the Zenbals and started using
AHEAD aluminum drumsticks, which seem to help as well.
I continue to use a TP pad for both my HiHat and Ride, but to date I
have experienced no pain in the joints of my right elbow or wrist.
However, these are soon to be replaced by Zenbals as well (hopefully).

On a side note, what's with all us old guys playing e-drums? Aren't
we supposed to purists, playing little Gretsch jazz kits and using
brushes? Maybe if we did we wouldn't have all these aches and pains!

Doesn't mean the sticks don't help-they just aren't transforming. these are 5As I think. I'm like anyone else- looking for the magic bullet.

vivid imagery Stewart. Perhaps too vivid?
(Ed- I like the idea of mesh heads- mesh cymbals seem a bit wierd, however.)
Thanks

While we're on the subject, has anyone noticed the variation in 5As
across different makers? I use two brands mainly, Pro Mark
Millennium IIs and Zildjians, and they are so different in feel that
I consider the Pro Marks to be my rock sticks and the Zildjians my
precision ones.

What we old bastards need from our kits is enough give to keep these
brittle bodies from breaking down. The polymer coating of the ZB
cymbal should help, but the meshes, or even mylars, are a godsend in
that regard. Proper posture, grip, and technique helps, too. I've
been learning about that recently.

Stephen, I had one of those Gretsch jazzy kits for years (still have
it)--actually a Walberg and Auge, the OEM manufacturers--with a
Ludwig chrome shell snare from the sixties handed down by Buddy
Miles of all people. I loved it so much that I kept adjusting it
myself to accommodate new sounds. At the end of the road, it was so
riddled with tape and muffling that it looked a little like
mummified Egyptian drums.

After all this talk of Zenbals I have made a decison to purchase the
Zenbal China. I was going to purchase another PCY65 to use as a
china but I've decided I needed to try another brand's product that
wasn't the size of my pecan pie slices. I trust this group more
than any other drum group because, because of them I purchased a
DTXpressII, they've given me helpful advice even before I owned a
kit. From there it was nothing but trust and help in making sound
decisions. Thanks!

Re: Zildjian antivibes (was: Pintechs - dual or stereo?)

2003-05-02 by liberatusvirus

That sounds like a wonderful relationship. Whenever I put any music
on my main system, my four-year-old daughter says, "Daddy, I don't
want to hear your songs; I want to hear my songs." So then it's back
to the soundtrack for Mary Poppins or the Little Mermaid. She does
like the Beatles (often forcing her parents to impersonate them
endlessly), but if I hear Rubber Soul one more time (as much as I
revere it), I may plotz.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Zildjian antivibes (was: Pintechs - dual or stereo?)

2003-05-02 by Creighton Higgins

My 14-year-old daughter is doing a paper on the Beatles. It's been great having the music on and talking about what was happening at the time of each LP. She came across a picture of me with hair down my back and had a small attack.

Creighton,

Isn't it weird to think that your daughter probably regards the era
as ancient history? I'm always taken aback by "kids" who don't have
a sense of the Beatles or other musicians of the time. Fortunately,
in my dotage, I've reached a place where music is eternal; it
doesn't matter where or when it emerged, as long as I like it. It
removes the pressure of trying to stay hip and current, but it does
tend to swell the collection.

And then they go and surprise you. My daughters are 17, 15 and 12
and all musicians. The middle daughter is a fine singer and pianist
and was recently rewarded for a performance of Britten's Abraham and
Isaac with music shop coupons. She returned with a book of Sinatra
classics. When she was about 10, I once came down to find her at the
computer doing some school work, with headphones on. Turned out she
was listening to Coltrane. And now we perform Vanessa Carlton stuff
together (number 1 daughter plays bass too).

(Drags thread back vaguely on topic) ... saw Nate Morton playing
with VC in London recently. Never seen him before, but he was
*excellent* - fantastic work rate, great showman, but with that
difficult to pin down quality of apparently having plenty of time to
spare. Last but not least, he looked like he was having a great time.

Er. And he occasionally uses trigger pads. There, on topic!

Stewart,

Can you tell that I don't feel much like working today? Anyway, you
have an incredibly musical family. I couldn't even pretend to follow
Coltrane until I was in my twenties (when I could start pretending
with authority, as well as palpitate to Elvin Jones), and I must
confess that Vanessa Carlton and Nate Morton are unfamiliar to me,
but based on your family's credentials, they seem well worth finding
out about.

Re: Zildjian antivibes (was: Pintechs - dual or stereo?)

Talk about not waning to work much today... It's Derby week here in
beautiful Louisville, KY and most everybody was out at the track
today. The 'Oaks' which is run today, is pretty much referred to as
the LOUISVILLE DERBY. The office was empty. I was stuck there holding
down the fort, because me and the Prez are going out tomorrow.
I'll see a lot of pretty fillies tomorrow (and some horses, too)

Kentucky: Home of fast horses and beautiful women. Or is that the
