Zenbal ZB2

Zenbal ZB2

2003-05-07 by Creighton Higgins

To catch some of you up- My PCY crash failed last week- choke and rim
functions died, and after reviewing features and costs, I ordered a
ZB2 from Ed at Drumbalaya. (If any of you have not visited
www.drumbalaya.com yet, scoot on over. It's a fine site devoted to
all the major e-drum lines)
The new cymbal arrived right on time yesterday and I have literally
only had a few moments to play with it. Right off I have a problem-
when I whack the edge there is a noticeable delay in the trigger-
about a beat if you have the click set to 80. Much as I like to play
ahead of the beat- this requires way too much anticipation for
someone with a crusty nervous system like myself.
I'm confident (?) this can be resolved through settings- can anyone
steer me to the right location to begin tweaking? I am pre-grateful
for any help.

Slow Wednesday- I have to answer my own posts...
Ed from Drumbalaya got back to me within minutes- given the 3 hour
time difference tween Baltimore and Seattle, I'm convinced the man
never sleeps. He suggests I turn the cymbal so the sensor box is
facing me. I turned it away from me to protect it.
Tomorrow I will continue this discussion with me to let me know how
it worked.

Creighton:
Turning the trigger box to face you is a REQUIREMENT in having the
ZENBAL react properly. Or, at least that's what I have discovered. I
do have one ZB2 whose rim I just couldn't get to fire. I am awaiting
a replacement from Pintech.
I took me a while to get the parameters set just right for the ZB2,
and I had a lot of frustration with them at first. Now, I don't think
I'll ever use anything else that's currently on the market.

Creighton, does it respond ok when you hit the ride cymbal part of
the pad? I too am looking at buying a Zenbal China and I guess I'll
have to adjust the trigger box towards me as well huh? Let us know
how it goes!

UN.H.
The short answer is yes. Triggered perfectly with the 1st hit. (choke worked fine right away too- better feel than the Yamahas) The surface is interesting- seems to have more traction(?) than the PCY and is a bit softer for lack of a better word. It will be interesting to see how it feels side-by-side with the Yamaha wedges. Now that I am aware that there is a sweet spot for rim triggers, I understand the rationale for the wedge shape- impossible to hit the wrong side of the cymbal.
More news to come.

Yes, it swings. And so do I.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Zenbal ZB2

Yup- swings OK
Worked late last night and had little time to play so info is limited so far:
rotated the cymbal and the latency I complained of went away. Now I need to figure out how to stop the rim from triggering the center- getting fierce machine gun stutter. I am liking the feel of the rim for choking- seems to allow a range of effect. The output seems lower than the Yamaha pads- needed to take volume up allot to match the other cymbals. I think the stick sound is more pronounced, though maybe that's because I was whacking it extra hard to get it to trigger initially.

Hey Stephen
I think I'm going to like this cymbal also. I have both areas responding now (rotated cymbal) choke is incredible. Edge is triggering bow with a machine gun stutter. I am interested to know if this was an issue for you and if what parameters you adjusted. I played with spec reject and self reject with little improvement.
Thanks
Creighton
