d-drum snare and dtxpress

2003-05-15 by ankoanko2003

Hello everybody,

I was offered a d-drum snarepad. The guy wants to sell it because it
doesn't work well with his Roland TD-6 (especially the rolls don't
come out as they should). Does anybody know how it works with a
dtxpress 1? And does anybody know if the d-drum snare is a dual zone
(2 piezos) or a stereo pad (1 piezo, 1 condensator)?

Thanks,

Anko

Anko,

I've never used it, but from the product description it appears to
be a true dual-zone (two piezo) pad. If it were to work with the
dtxpress I or II, it might have to be treated like a triggered
acoustic drum, given the location of the trigger toward the rim,
rather than the center, without any foam padding. One caution: ddrum
triggers have a history of spotty performance through Yamaha modules
because of their design. In short, there's no guarantee that the
snare will perform correctly with Yamaha. You either have to try it
yourself or consult with a ddrum speciallist.

Ed,

Thanks for the answer. And do you know if the Roland pd 120 dual zone
pad works well with the dtxpress (another advertisement I spotted).

Anko,

Theoretically, the Roland PD120 would trigger through the Yamaha
like any other dual-zone snare. However, at least one user has
reported that the rim doesn't generate enough signal for use with
the DTXPU. My gripe with it is that it is too bloody expensive for
what it is. I have used it with Roland equipment--and liked it--but
under no conditions do I view it as worth twice as much as other
dual-zone snare options. If you can find the Yamaha RHP snare that
originally came with the DTXtreme, it would be a viable alternative,
especially at its new discount price. It, like the Roland, is a 12"
pad. Pintech makes a 10" mesh snare, the ConcertCast 102ST, that
many of us have used and loved. Notwithstanding its size, at $120 or
less it's a genuine bargain. Pintech's AX14S mesh snare, which
measures 14" and usually costs $180 new, is even better. I've had
both; another member of this board, Scott (hairytrigger)also highly
endorses the AX14S somewhere in the archives.

Thanks again Ed, I'll try to find a Yamaha RHP snare!
