New owner:Hi-Hat & Cymbal Adjustments & Amp recommendations

Hi,

I am a new owner of a DTXpress kit -- pretty cool! This is a great
site - thanx to those who helped launch it. A couple of Q's:

1) Specifically, if anyone has it, how can you make the hi-
hat "schwooop" sound -- where you would on an acoustic set hit the hi-
hat, open, and there's a delayed schwoop sound, completed with a
clean, clear sound of the hi-hat closing. I've tried to adjust the
footpedal, and it often misses the closing sound -- and not nearly as
sensitive as it should be. I have upped the "sensitivity" settings,
but can't find any discernable difference. Ditto for any DTX model
adjustments. Please - provide settings -- as the manual was obviously
written by a techie who doesn't play drums. It would have been better
if they went drum pad by pad and told you how to dial in good sounds,
etc.

2) Any good amps that you would recommend? I saw a Behringer KX1200
advertised in Musician's Friend site -- 120W keyboard amp, 3-way bass
reflex cabinet housing 15" woofer, 5" midrange and tweeter. 4-channel
operation with line inputs and dedicated volume contrdols. 4-band
active EQ, too. price was $249 --- is this a reasonable amp to use?
Other brands/model recommendations? Has anyone tried to use a PA and
run monitors instead of a stand alone amp? If so, how? I have a
Mackie 808 PA that should have enough power if that's an option.

Thanks for anyone out there with input. Keep on rockin' - Draker2003

Hey Draker, welcome to the group and welcome to a great, fun, e-
kit! A couple of days ago I asked about the very same Behringer
KX1200 amp and I got some bad feedback! I was told that brand was
known for bad dynamics. There is distorting and such! Its a good
deal but the sound isn't worth it! I can tell you a keyboard amp
would be best to handle an electronic kits dynamic range, but try
brands such as Yamaha, Roland (expensive, but good!), and Peavey. I
myself am now looking at Yamaha and Roland keyboard amps. What kind
of purpose will the amp serve once you have it? Are you going for
practice in a little studio or playing live? Because the amp you
need may need more or less power depending on its use. There are
some amps made especially for e-drums such as that new, red, huge
amp by Roland but it costs $850.00. That thing is about as big as
the kit itself! You can also check out the Roland KC series amps
too. I know some other users on here use those and can provide you
with more information. Look at a couple of posts back, the thread
was titled "another amp question." There is good information within
in that thread.

Well, physically you make it exactly the same way as you would on an
acoustic kit, of course. If it's basically the pedal not responding
correctly, have you made sure that you used a stereo cable between
the hi-hat pedal and the brain? A mono cable won't do.

Hello there

For what it's worth, I stick my DTXpress II through the PA that is
set up in the rehearsal studio we use. It works a treat and sounds
amazing. The only thing I would say about it though is you definatly
need to have a monitor otherwise you simply can't hear yourself over
the rest of the band............A situation I have never encountered
before being a drummer until I got my electric kit! Come to think of
it I used to quite like being the loudest person in the room and
making everyone else adjust thier settings to suit me :)

I use the Behringer KX1200 as a stand alone amp when I need that and
a monitor when I go thru a house PA system. For the size and power,
this amp is great and $249.

I use the Behringer DI20 direct box (set to link mode) when I go thru
the house PA system. I connect the KIT to the DI20 (1/4") and
connect the 2nd 1/4" out back to my monitor (my KX1200) and the DI20
xlr to the xlr PA input. $19.99
