trigger modules

trigger modules

2003-08-01 by M E

Can anybody recommend a good triggering module that has a seperate output for each trigger. I was gonna use my DTX2 but its only got stereo outputs and it'd be nice for my sound dude to have control over each trigger.
Anything with multiple outputs that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Thanks-
Max

Max:
I'm not aware of any module that has an output for EACH trigger,
although the Rolands, I believe, have six outputs.

You could do what I did, and that is to add another DTX and separate
your sounds into groups, i.e. Bass, Snare, Toms, Cymbals, using the
four available outputs on the two modules.

Hey Max,

Anything with multiple outputs on that scale would cost an arm and a
leg, and it would be impracticable. Stephen's situation would allow
you to add more inputs and group them thematically or according to
position on the rack. But a single module's MIDI capabilities allow
enough control over triggers to render any desire for separate
outputs unnecessary. For starters, you can pan voices toward the
center or widely scatter them; you can add reverb/effects to your
heart's desire (if you like another unit's better, you can use it
instead); you can vary individual volume/gain; etc. I'm curious
about what your sound guy is trying to get that the DTXPIIU won't
give him.

The DTXtreme module has six (6) individual outputs as well as the two
mixed outputs (like the DTXpress module). You assign the snare, kick,
toms, cymbals, hi-hat and misc. groups to each corresponding output of
the module. I have mine setup this way feeding my Behringer MX2004
mixer, each with it's own individual channel. It works great, allows a
final mix at the mixer and also allows rough volume control through the
DTXtreme's front panel volume sliders before the signal is sent to the
mixer.

DTXtreme's are hard to come by these days as Yamaha has discontinued
it, so you'll probably have to look for one used at a shop like
Drumbalaya or search Ebay for auctions. Hopefully the new replacement
for the DTXtreme module will have similar features.

Ed,

True, the DTX2 has adequate control parameters, but a live sound engineer's request for seperate outputs is not unreasonable.

Whilst playing live I use a blend of miked acoustic drums and the samples that they trigger. Say the guitarist starts to dig in more suddenly during a song. I may not notice a small lift in volume so my engineer raises the mike level and the sample level. Total control at his end means a satisfactory blend of the two sounds.

Even at a constant volume, he'll be able to tweak the blend based on a songs changes for a sonically fuller sound.

What you hear through a moniter is always different to FOH. It would be crazy not to have quick and easy access to every sound source. Would your engineer seriously let you play live without that kind of control?

Max,

You're absolutely right. The more discrete the better. I was basing
my reply on the assumption that money was truly an object (it still
is) and that the question might be coming from someone who might not
yet have exploited the module for everything it's worth. We get a lot
of that here--people who get way ahead of themselves because they
aren't familiar with all of its capabilities yet. Cost being a factor
also inclined me in that direction. Sorry about that. But I still
don't know how to do it either simply or inexpensively, the
discontinued Xtreme module is prismatic at a cost of $600 or less, if
you can find it now. It's definitely in short supply. I've never
checked the Roland TD10 or 8 for multiple outputs, but it would be
easy enough to find out. But, again, at Roland prices, it doesn't
come cheap.
