Quick question about bass pedals

Quick question about bass pedals

2003-08-13 by Randy

As I mentioned previously, I'm a new drummer and really just doing
this for "kicks". I need to get a bass pedal, and I'm seeing two
major designs, those that use two metal rods to connect the unit
together, and those that use a large flat metal sheet.

At first I thought that the large metal sheet MUST be superior, but I
see that a few companies (Pearl, Tama, etc) sell the metal rod style
in some units that cost well over $50-60, so they can't be THAT bad,
can they?

I'm looking to spend $20-50 on this, what are your thoughts?

Actually, I prefer the pedals with plates on them and not the rods, as I feel
they're more stable that way. The nice, decent ones with plates are going to
run you quite a bit more than that, more like about $70 and up. If I were
you, I would do what I did. I did without pedals because I didn't have the
drum kit at the time, so I picked out a pair of plated double pedals (not
that one-plated, one-rodded arrangement), put down as much money as I could
without running out of gas or starving, and then paid it off about two months
later. I think they're worth it, because I use them by themselves at least
an hour a day, and that doesn't include the drumset playing in addition to
that.

I've been eyeing this $24 pedal as my second kick pedal.

This particular auction ends in 12 hours but they have other ones listed.

My first pedal is a used DW 5000 that I got for $65 off of Ebay. It is very smooth.
Several message boards and Drumbalaya recommend the Tama Iron Cobra Jr. which go for about $65 new.

I have a TAMA Iron Cobra on my Acoustic kit. When I bought my DTX
(supposedly for use only as a practice kit), I bought a TAMA HP200
for $39. I now use my DTX (with major modifications) as my LIVE kit.
And, guess what, I still use the $39 pedal with it.

It doesn't have that rock plate, just the two connecting rods.
However, it holds steady and is quick and quite. Plus, it packs away
very nicely.
