Good Layered Hi Hat Settings.

Good Layered Hi Hat Settings.

2003-09-08 by Russell

OK guys and Gals I dont know if you wanna try this one out but I
think its the best layered Hi Hat settings I have found so far I
have spent some time programming different kits and I will upload
some shortly in the files section,I would nt mind some feedback on
what you guys think, but here are the hi-hat settings.......

Layer 1

H/023 MU close
Vol 75 Pan R30
Tune 0 F=-1
Layer Balance ---0
Decay +5 Fc=-1
X-Fade=4

All other setting are default.

Layer 2

H/047 32 Close
Vol 60 Pan R30
Tune +3 F=-6
Layer Balance ---0
Decay +20 Fc=-4
X-Fade=4

All other settings are default.

Give it a go folks, its definatly better than all the preset Hi-Hat
settings,if you do come up with anything better, then I would be
grateful in hearing from you.

                     Many Thanks

Thanks Tom for the advice on layering - so simple I wonder how I
didn't saw it there before.

And Russel, what good open sound settings can complete the excellent
close HH sound you've sent in?

Russel,

I think it sounds great. The only problem for me is the volume, so I
turned de volume up on both layers, keeping the difference at 15 (127
and 112. But It is still far to soft. Any suggestions on this?

Russel,

One of the problems I noticed right away when I purchased my DtxpressII was
the volume issue. I was constantly increasing the volume of individual pads
until everyone was between 110 and 127 just to listen through head phones
with an aux tape feed coming in. Even after buying a small preamp and mixer,
I got the volume needed but didn't get the right balance. So my solution was
to turn everything down and start over. I took one of my kits and lowered
the volume of each pad down to 70. I then adjusted the pads that I whated to
highlight up and let the amplifier do what it's designed to do...AMPLIFY the
overall sound level to the headphones/amp. The difference was incredible.
Now instead of getting a 27% boost in sound level from pad to another (100
vs 127 volume level), I was able to get a 78% boost in sound level for a
particular pad over another (70 vs 127). So now my closed hihat, bell pad,
snare rim shots really stands out when I want it to. I set one kit with a
more balanced level between pads and the next one up the accented pads set
at a higher level.

As usual, OGD's suggestion hits the nail right on the head. People
have been complaining about the Xpress volume level since the group
formed. I'll soon have a Rolls HA43 headphone amp to sell. It's small
(3" x 4" x 1.25") and unobtrusive. Max gain is 20 db/channel. It has
four 1/4" TRS stereo outputs and a single 1/4" stereo TRS input for
connection to either a stereo line level source (like the output on
the back of the Xpress, using a TRS splitter) or a stereo headphone
output (like that on the front of the Xpress). It provides much more
control, and sheer volume, in conjunction with the elementary mixer
that comes standard with the Xpress. Anyone interested should let me
know.
