Is my KP65 dying?

Is my KP65 dying?

2003-11-11 by adamh52683

I've had my dtxpress 2 for a couple of months now and have noticed
that the pad on my kp65 has a small indent at the top of its impact
point. My question is, does this effect the triggers response to a
noticable degree and what problems should I look for before deciding
that I need to replace the entire kp65 unit? Thanks.

Adam,

Many people have reported that the rubber surface on their KP65s
began to show signs of wear within a few months. Although a little
dent or soft spot wouldn't necessarily translate into a noticeable
deficiency in triggering, you should take care before it gets
serious. Just for the record, the Yamaha replacement part is
p/n8587900, but there are easier, quicker fixes. OGD suggests gluing
a rubber bicycle-tire patch to the face of the pad. Stephanie
recommends applying a drum beater patch that you can buy at your
local music store. Whatever method you choose, you should
periodically switch the position of your beater slightly left/right
and up/down to minimize further problems. By the way, these DIY
strategies will not negate your warranty.

One flaw or another has always dogged the DTXpress kick. The KP60 had
a troublesome circuitboard, and the 65 has flimsy rubber on the
exterior and possibly crumbly foam padding around the piezo. I've had
a Drum Tech kick pad for more than 3 years. You can certainly tell
where it's taken most of its punishment, but it has yet to flinch.
It's all about price point. The Drum Tech is built like the
proverbial tank, but it costs as much as a (small) tank, too.

I'll put in my 2 cents & personal experience here...

Similar to the previous mention of problematic circuit boards.

My DTXpress I set was having problems with my kick missing some
trigger hits...I ordered TWO new replacement triggers & I replaced
the trigger. Well guess what? Did not help at all! Damn!

Then I took it appart again & checked the circuit board & trigger
jack connection. Seemed ok - Even under a magnifying glass!

Well, I re-soldered the connections anyway just in case there was a
hair line broken solder joint...BINGO!!! For the 1st time in almost
a year it's dead on!

Steve,

Back in the 20th C, when I had just bought a DTXpress and was having
the same problem as you, that's the first thing Dave told me to do.
It's a good reminder: First check cable; then jack and visible
connections; than re-solder everything.

I'm having similar problems with my KP65. the sponge underneath the rubber cover has compacted on the right side (i'm using dbl pedals) and now produces a very weak signal, whereas the left side of the KP is still producing a healthy signal. Do i need a new piezo and sponge? If anybody has changed their's before I'd be interested to know if it's an easy operation and what the model numbers are of the parts needed.

This certainly seems to be one of the DTX flaws. Do the the DTX veterans out there just use different triggers to avoid this prob?

Thanks,

Max

Max,

I'm no expert or verteran, but when I changed the trigger out in my
Kick pad I had to leave out part of a thick pad insert/wedge (if
this is what you call a sponge?) peice as it would not fit back in
the rubber cover with the new insert replacement.
So, what I'm saying is that the replacement I got was a 'complete'
insert that totally filled up tight the inner part of the rubber
cover. In fact so tight I struggled for quite a while to fit it back
together & almost stripped the screws! - I got smart & used a clamp
to hold it in place so I could screw it back together with less
struggling.

Not so hard to change out otherwise! I thought one of the earlier
above replies on this original thread gave a model number?
Anyway, I called Musicians Friend where I bought my DTXpress from &
they gave me a number to call where they deal in DTXpress
replacement parts!

Hope this helps.

Steve
