NAMM videos

2004-01-20 by the Sonic Energy Authority

I downloaded Real Player to experience the video demos from NAMM.
Well when I say video, I had some piss poor sound quality, and the
occasional frame movement, guess that's what you get for having to live on
a dial-up connection. Would have been nice if there was a download option
for Quicktime, or Windows media player.

Anyway, thought the Yammy demo was okay, then I heard the Roland TD20, it
blew me away.
You have to give Roland credit, it's a stunning bit of kit, no doubt with a
price to match. When I win a few million or so on the lottery, I think that
will be on my shopping list.

You can take some consolation in the fact that the Roland won't eat
up the entire few million; you can still eat from time to time. If
you buy Yamaha's DTXtremeIIS instead, for which no video exists as
yet, you can still use the lottery money to support yourself and buy
other things.

True, to really enjoy the videos, you really do need a high-speed connection
for streaming videos. I think once they are converted to a downloadable
format and you can watch them directly from your hard drive, you will be
able to better see each kits ability. The Roland kit does have some neat
features, but for my money, I would rather use it to buy two DTxtreme IIS
and end up with big fun mega kit than just one smaller kit that has a few
extra bells and whistles in the module (and no sampling) , and one that is
expensive to upgrade.

Hey Vern, think about it "Sampling" and Halloween sound effects, I am
already planning.

AHHH! Stop! I can't spend any more money... :P And now *another* reason
to upgrade my kit.... hmmmm... ;)

Vern

PS: I'm already thinking of gettting those "butt kicker" surplus
transducers and using them under the "drawbridge" to give the kids a
startle when they knock on the door! :D

Here's another idea, Vern... Use PA amps under that drawbridge, connected to
a mic that you use to talk into before opening the door. Or connect them to
a stereo output of a violent movie like Diehard or Lethal Weapon. Use a
scene that would sound like somebody's shooting at them through a front
window.

heh heh! C00l idea!! :) Course, I don't have to use a DVD for the machine
gun effects... just some fast rolls on the snare :D
