Punchier Toms?

Punchier Toms?

2004-02-14 by bbdude22004

Hi. This is my first post here. I've had a DTXII for about a year.
I've been using it for recording and I think it sounds good with the
rest of the rock band I'm recording with, with one exception: I
can't get the toms sounding puncy enough. Right now I'm using a
modified version of the Rock Kit (factory preset 3) for mu user
preset. I'm using the Room2 (Hi, Mid, Lo) tom sounds instead of the
Room1 (Hi, Mid, Lo) toms. The Room2 toms are the punchiest I could
find, but they still don't seem to cut through the mix. I'm looking
for something with a sharper attack with more a stick sound. Any
suggestions?

Remember - layering is your friend. Have a look for some sounds that
have the attack you need (but perhaps miss out on the overall sound
or sustain) and layer them on your tom sounds.

I'm planning on having a tom tinker myself sometime soon. I was
wondering how layering acoustic and electric toms would sound as I
seem to recall the electric tom sounds having more bite.

Unfortunately, I'm having a studio* move round at the moment so
everything's disconnected right now.

Don't rule out "non-tom" sounds too. Some of the "ethnic" percussion
may have the attack you seek. I'd have a play too, but we have a
house full of 13-year-olds (#3 daughter's birthday) and I'm hiding
in the study...

I hadn't thought of that. Another excellent tip! It could however
lead to me spending hours and hours layering every possible
combination of sounds. Hmm... a gong might give the floor tom a
boost. :-)

Personally, I've found that if you're looking for a good clean
acoustic tom sound, layering the Maple tom sounds is the way to go.
For my high tom I use Maple12/Maple10, meduim is Maple14/Maple12,
and low is Maple16/Maple14. I acutally got the idea from the
Funk4pc syx file that is availbe in the files section. As far
as "punch" is concerned, certain tuning combo's between the higher
and lower tom sound for each drum make a big difference. Hope that
helps.

Same here, except I layer MapleXX with a touch of the equivalent
Room1 tom. All I do for different styles of kit is adjust the amount
of Room1 and change the overall tuning. I haven't found a more
pleasing combination yet.
