dtxpress I.... line output

dtxpress I.... line output

2004-02-25 by rtmt91drummer

Hi, I just bought a Behringer b300 powered speaker for use with my
dtxpress1. I spoke to a rep at behringer and they said I should use
the line input on the speaker instead of the mic input. When I use
the mic input I get great sound but if I switch it to line the sound
volume goes way down. He mentioned that the line output of my drum
module my be to low (any body know what it is... (he mentioned -10db
on some older ones and then +4db on some newer ones)
and that I should use a DI box to convert the signal to a mic level
so I could then use the mic input side which has a built in pre amp.
Anybody used this speaker or know what I should do.
Would the fact that I am using a mono cable have any effect?
Should I use a y-cable and combine l-r to a TRS cable then to speaker?

Thanks.

First of all, because the Behringer is a single speaker, and the
DTXpress module has a dedicated mono output, you don't need to find a
special way to convert stereo to mono. The mono cable isn't a
problem. I don't have a clue what the output level from the module
is, but if it's too low for the Behringer line input, a DI box would
balance the line, probably help to keep hum and signal noise down,
suitably lower its impedance to match that of the mic input, and
maybe attenuate the resulting signal sufficiently to protect the
preamp on the Behringer from overload and distortion. Why not try it?
DI boxes aren't necessarily expensive; some are $30 to $40. Maybe
someone else has an informed view.

rtmt91drummer:
While I've never run the DTX through a mic level input, I've run it
at the line level through many pieces of equipment (i.e. Samson KB140
amp, Peavey powered monitored, directly through probably twenty
different mixing consoles) and have never felt there was a lack of
juice coming through the line.
This may seem elementary, I and I don't mean to offend, but are you
certain you're running the mono cable through the LEFT output, which
is actually to your right as you're facing the back of the module?
Just a thought.

Thanks I will double check to make sure. So I shouldn't see a volume
drop right? If I do have the cable in the the right connection, what
elese could be problem? Do you have a dtxpress 1 module?

Thanks for all the help.

Try a headphone feed from the back of the module, adjusting the
volume with the knob on the front. You should be able to get a level
commensurate with what comes out of the headphone jack. If not, the
output may be damaged. By the way, you are adjusting the output
volume with the knob on the front, right? What happens if you run a
line out from the headphone jack to the Behringer?

rtmt:
Yes, I have the DTX 1 (two, in fact). Ed had a good idea of testing
through the headphone output. Try that. Also, set your kit to LIVE
mode in the UTIL section as that will give you more volume.
Are you running the line level out into a channel on the monitor that
is both pre-amped and straight line? If so, the pre-amped channel
should have a GAIN control knob - check its setting, as well.

BTW, Hello, Ed!

I set the kit back up last weekend, but I still have some serious
programming to do.
