Steven, I am trying to do exactly what you are. I have found I like one of Paul's curves for the VMS inks for the 1290. It is "vms1290-gs1" and it's not one the curves that makes the color go all whacked out. It appears to be more of a general balanced lightening overall. I am on a MAC but would assume it would work on a PC since it is claimed to be cross platform. When I go to print with preview in PS7 I set the source color space as Adobe98 and the output as Same as Source. When the next window appears I go into the advanced menu and select No Color Adjustment. Of couse all other settings are as would be appropriate (Archival Matte as paper type, Color on, High speed off, etc.). On good full range images it gives a nice uniform warm grey on EEM. Nice gradations too. I did find, however on a dull and flattish image (which I want that way on purpose) there were some flat spots and lost detail in transitions from dark to mid tone grey. I'm thinking the curve may not be appropriate for such low key images. Also, I'm wondering if some of these problems could be due to the infamous driver update that was released to reduce metamerism in 2002. I noticed that my outputs got a lot grainier after that update and am going to try installing the old driver to see what effect that has. I haven't given up yet on this old dog as it's a great device in general and was made for pigmented inks in the first place. Good luck to you.
