Epson 2000P and UT workflow?

Epson 2000P and UT workflow?

2003-12-12 by wayfaringpilgrim

Has anyone developed a solid Epson 2000P and Ultratone ink workflow? I've tried to
adapting Paul Roark's 1280 curves and have even tried creating custom QuadToneRip
curves ... but have remained dissatisfied with the results. Anyone having success with
this combination? Should I just give up and by a 1280?

You might want to try UT-2 when it's available and see if that will work
with the printer. It's a much easier inkset to tame because the ink
densities are close to what the printers are designed for. It might be that
sliders will give reasonable tonal control.

Thanks Paul. I assume that I would still need to purchase the 1280 carts (for UT-2)
and then rechip them? Or will MIS be offering a 2000P cart?

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 2000P and UT workflow?

I just bought the UT set a week ago, hooked up one of my 2000p's, &
I've been struggling to get a smooth gradation ever since. The
curves I downloaded for the 2000p just aren't quite right for my
setup (using Epson matte & Vesta lustre). First, I have to do a 90
to 97 curve in rgb just to get the print as dark as my monitor (I'm
calibrated perfectly for color) - this gives me a fairly decent
gradation on the test strip, but still off enough in some steps to
cause odd posterization on some prints.

Are there folks using UT-1 w/the Epson 2000p's successfully? If so,
I'd love to hear from you & try your curves. Could I be missing
something in the workflow causing my disappointing results? - I've
read the workflow pages many times over & can't find the problem.

I don't have a 1280 to throw into the mix, but I can certainly
convert & dedicate the UT-1/2000p CFS over to my 1270 w/minimum fuss
& expense (just 1 empty color cartridge) if I can expect better
results.

If I just need to take my curves, my printed test strips, my flatbed
scanner & the PS eyedropper & play w/the curves I've got until I get
good results, then I'm prepared to do that - I just need some expert
advice on where to start.

Re: Epson 2000P and UT workflow?

Steven, I am trying to do exactly what you are. I have found I like
one of Paul's curves for the VMS inks for the 1290. It is
"vms1290-gs1" and it's not one the curves that makes the color go all
whacked out. It appears to be more of a general balanced lightening
overall. I am on a MAC but would assume it would work on a PC since
it is claimed to be cross platform.

When I go to print with preview in PS7 I set the source color space as
Adobe98 and the output as Same as Source. When the next window
appears I go into the advanced menu and select No Color Adjustment.
Of couse all other settings are as would be appropriate (Archival
Matte as paper type, Color on, High speed off, etc.). On good full
range images it gives a nice uniform warm grey on EEM. Nice
gradations too. I did find, however on a dull and flattish image
(which I want that way on purpose) there were some flat spots and lost
detail in transitions from dark to mid tone grey. I'm thinking the
curve may not be appropriate for such low key images. Also, I'm
wondering if some of these problems could be due to the infamous
driver update that was
released to reduce metamerism in 2002. I noticed that my outputs got
a lot grainier after that update and am going to try installing the
old driver to see what effect that has. I haven't given up yet on
this old dog as it's a great device in general and was made for
pigmented inks in the first place. Good luck to you.

Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for your response. Did you mean that you are using ultratone inks with the
1290 vms curve (or are you using the vms inks)?

I'm also using a Mac running OS X 10.2.8. I'd like to try your suggestion for the vms
curve, but unfortunately I just ran out of ink. I'm thinking about waiting for the UT-2
inks to come out before re-ordering. What's your plan?

Steve

Steve,

I was thinking you might want to try loading UT-2 (bulk) into empty 2000P
carts, if they exist. It's just a stab in the dark. I don't know how close
the ink densities are.

I wish they would. We can't be the only people who have a leftover 2000P
that they'd like to dedicate to B&W.

Re: Epson 2000P and UT workflow?

hi Steve, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I am using the UT
inkset with Eboni black. Testing this on EEM because it's fairly
inexpensive. I had to buy the 1280 carts and swap the chips from some
old OEM 2000p carts. The printer did not recognized the chips that
came on the UT carts even after resetting. I have ordered the 4oz.
bulk ink and some virgin 1280 carts that I will refill and rechip.
I'll wait and see how UT-2 is received before commiting to that. Some
of the UT-2 workflow is based on using the sliders and I have never
gotten good results with those controls, plus I like the tone I am
getting with the UT. Makes a beautiful print with a high quality
image but ones with less range have some chunky transitions.
Hopefully a little tweak to the VMS1290-GS1 curve is all that is needed
