RE: [Digital BW] MIS Ultratone - Longevity Tests

2004-06-07 by Paul Roark

Mike,

At http://www.livick.com/method/inkjet/pg2d2.htm, about 1/3 of the way down
the page, Livick seems to have some tests that indicate up to a 681 year
longevity for MIS Ultra Tone ink printed with a 1280.

Livick uses outside direct sun for testing, as best I can tell. I don't
think he even uses a plain glass between the sun and the test strip. So,
there is a lot of very short wavelength UV in the light source. Plain
window glass usually filters this out in indoor display. With this light
source, coatings that have a UV absorber in them will probably have a major
advantage, which might not be the case in normal indoor display.
Clearshield has such a UV absorber. Lascaux spray and Hydrocote do not.

Livick seems to have been looking at various combinations of sprays and
coatings. I don't really understand all the test results, but,
needless-to-say, I'm pleased to see the Ultra Tone ink doing so well.

Subject: [Digital BW] MIS Ultratone - Longevity Tests

I was wondering if anybody had seen these test results posted on a
gum printing site, which seem to indicate 400-600 years longevity for
Ultratone inks on certain papers with fixatives applied:

http://www.livick.com/method/inkjet/pg2d2.htm

I'm not sure about the methodology here, as there are terms thrown
around that I don't quite understand (neutral gray band test?). But
the numbers seem impressive and I'm curious if similar tests have
been done elsewhere for prints with fixatives (like Clearshield or
Lascaux) applied.
