New Website

2010-08-20 by lgrrrb@bellsouth.net

Group Members,

I have enjoyed this group for a long time and have learned a huge a lot.

I have done black & white landscape photography for many years but have kept my photos mostly to myself. I continue to shoot only 4inch x 5inch film but have been scanning my negatives during the last few years and printing digitally (44inch wide HP Z3100). I believe that I have been getting wonderful quality in large prints.

Well, I finally launched a website to "show off" some of my images. I would be interested in any comments that members of this group can make about either my images or my website. My website address is:

www.RandallRBreseePhoto.com

Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance,
Randall R Bresee.

Not sure about having the slideshow on your home page , but rest of the site
seems fine to me - the pics are great, spirit of Ansel Adams lives on! You
can "feel" the 4x5 quality even via the low res webpics.

Steve,

Why do you have reservations about the slideshow? Does it confuse navigation or take too long to load?

I'm just trying to get a handle on this.

Thanks,
Randy.

I mostly agree with Steve. Wonderful images---spectacular eye and
execution! I don't mind the idea of the slideshow, but I would prefer to
have it as a clickable option, accessible from the homepage. I would
also like to have a pause function in the slideshow so I could stop on
images that I wanted to examine more closely. For the main homepage
image, I would suggest using one image for a couple of weeks and then
rotating to another. But overall, great work!

Re: [Digital BW] New Website

2010-08-20 by Bert Katzung

Another option regarding the slideshow would be to slow it down a lot.
I think my problem with it was that it was changing too fast and that
distracted me from the options listed across the top of the home page.
In fact I was so dazzled by the the wonderful slideshow images that I
didn't even notice the options across the top. Then I wanted to look for
Indians in the Athabasca waterfall image and I had to keep clicking the
back arrow to examine it. It was only later, when I saw the Galleries
option at the top, that I realized I could display a single image for as
long as I wanted.

Re: [Digital BW] New Website

Randall,

I have been looking at a lot of sites recently in thoughts of following your
path. I enjoy your site much more than some of the other sites I have
encountered. The trend seems to be an over population of links and distratcting
images causing confusion. On the oppostite end of the spectrum are the sites I
consider to be truly professional- clean, simple, and to the point. It is clean,
simple, intuitive, and offers solid information for interested customers without
giving away trade secrets. Navigation is fairly easy once the viewer realizes
there are hidden arrows on the left & right sides of the main page images.

On the other hand, if you aren’t, I would still take a look around to see how
many other sites are using similar color scheme. Not keeping track of it, it is
common for us B&W folks to use grey tones in a B&W web site. I personally don’t
know how to compliment the artistic value any other way than to use a
complimenting color scheme. Add texture and structure. Now we know why I haven’t
pursued a photo-based website.

The only item I would personally adjust is the background to move away from the
"Lightroom" color scheme. I do like the simple greytones scheme, though. Maybe
add some zone 3 textured background to add depth.

All in all, I would rate it 9 out of 10 for aesthetics and ease of use- I like
it.

For your art work- it’s off the scale, leaving me drooling on my keyboard. It is
simply beautiful.

Phil

I am assuming you are using a Photoshelter canned web site template. If you are,
then, if you haven’t done so already, take a look around to see how many other
photographers have used the same color scheme. If there are a high number of
Photoshelter clients using the same scheme, you may want to deviate from the
norm. It is hard to be unique when you look like everyone else. This is also a
downside of canned websites- lack of personality.

Re: New Website

I don't agree about getting away from the LR look, or having a unique color scheme. I don't care if the web site shows web site design artistry - I want to look at the photos. This site works for me because it is all about the photos.

Except, two comments. First, as someone else said, on the home page slide show I want to be able to pause to look longer at each image. And second, the About page font size is too small for my aging eyes.

Hope this helps,

  - susan

Re: New Website

2010-08-22 by James

Randall,
The site looks great.. as does your imagery. What I like the most about it is that the site does not overpower the images so over all I feel you have a good look.. Good Job! Their are many "done rights" in your site. I think you were looking for feed back in a constructive way so I'll toss in my nickel.. In no way are these intended any other then simply things for you to ponder as you move forward.

Slide show on the first page. Their is a couple of schools of thought on this.. who is it for? for the first time visitor they miss the opportunity to select a category to view images in areas of their personal interest.. Return visitors typically won't use it as they are already familiar with your work.. What if that option were on your gallery page .. or if it the home page had only your new pieces? Just some things to kick around.. Here's a thought .. We all like to look at incredible images.. that is oh so true.. But their is a difference between looking and buying.. WHen buyers trade their hard earned dollars for an expensive print or original there is another factor thatc falls into play ..They believe in the artist and he's credible to them

About and Purchase pages.. This is a tuff one so just let it in .. I have a service business and still shoot and sell my own prints.. so I'm sort of wearing two hats.. I still use a 4x5 and an 8x10 and have two drum scanners etc etc etc.. What these things are in the end are items of credibility that lead to your print prices.. SO the area of credibility I feel is not "bold enough" print is too small for most to read .. maybe a few more words.. Especially in the print area.. What I'm trying to so tactfully say is that 250.00 for an 8x12 ink jet print is a chunk of change .. not that it's a bad number it just needs credibility with it.. if that makes any sense.. Please understand I don't know you nor you me.. But given that I don't know you I found myself looking for areas of credibility to support the print price page.. Additionally more could be spoken about the print.. materials, the love etc etc..
Their was a post ..that alluded to the site doesn't matter it's all about the images.. To me that not correct.. it's about both.. No website can do justice to the imagery that I thing your printing. It's the words, descriptions and credibility areas that have the viewer dig deeper.. If your goal is to just share your images ..you did that.. If your vision is more.. .. well you know..

Anyway just ideas to ponder..

jimbo

Re: New Website

Mantinieri,

Kodak TriX sheet film tray-developed in HC-110B is still my workhorse film and developer. However, I also use T-Max 100 developed in T-MaxRS Developer/Replenisher when I need contrast expansions or contractions equal to or greater than N+2 or N-2. Actually, I like the "feel" of TriX better than T-Max but the later does considerably better for really long or really short development times.

I like the images on your website. The light in Italy in wonderful. I can understand why so many famous artists worked there!
