Epson r800/1800 Mis PK in MK position, is it possible?

2011-01-06 by joaohenriques1

Hi everyone,

A reader for a number of years of this very helpful group, i start by thanking all the contributors, but mostly Paul Roark for all the knowledge he has been so kind to share here.

I tried the 3 inks (Mk, PK and gloss) approach in my epson r800 but there were a load of problems, mostly connectd with the excess of ink hitting the paper.

I can print nice proofs in B&W or color with just the MK cart. But now i'm left with other full carts that i can't seem to use on Mk position, or can i?

I already eassayed PK but it's not the same black.

Any toughts?

Joao

The QTR ink limit must be too high for that printer. I used an 1800 to make the profiles and don't know how similar the drivers are. Recall also that the limits are specific to the paper type. So, if you're using a paper other than the one the profile was made for, the profile may be inappropriate.

If you bought MIS Eboni carts for the "3 MK" approach described here -- http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm -- you can interchange the chips on the carts and use the PK and Glop position carts in the MK position. I use a small piece of tape across the top of the chip to hold it in place. Never insert a cart with no chip or you're liable to wreck the printer. So, be sure the interchanged chips are securely held onto the carts.

Hi Paul,

As i am mostly doing proofing (in color and BW) with this printer with Epson Archival Matte papers i can live with the MK cart only, so it is a life saver to know that i can use the other cartridges as you described.

Thanks for answering this doubt.

Joao

I am using Epson OEM carts for 3PK printing. I remove the chips from empty MK and GO carts and put them on the PK cartridges, and reset them. I use a chewing gum like substance (Thumb Tack), sold to hang posters on walls, to attache them.

Use a sharp blade and scrape away the surface of the plastic rivets that holds the OEM chip in place. Place a pea sized wad of the Thumb Tack in the cavity behind the chip, and press the recycled chip onto what is left of the rivets. The Thumb Tack will hold them in place.

Then use a utility knife to remove the un-wanted guide pins from the PK cartridges. Use the MK and GO cartridges as guides for what needs to be removed.

This set up prints well on glossy papers. BUT.....One needs to use the QuadTone sliders on the bottom right of the menu to come up with the gamma, and ink control that suits their needs. It takes some testing.

When I find time, I am going to try making some profiles for this ink set.

Thanks Ben,

Never heard of this before. But i barely use glossy paper although it's nice to know this stuff. Somehow seems a similar aproach to the one described by Paul below.
