Newbie Here

Newbie Here

2011-02-24 by Rusty Sterling

Hi. Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Rusty and a seasoned photographer.

I use to do almost nothing but B&W as a photojournalist. Now I'm a fine arts photographer and turned to color for several years. This year I have decided to do nothing but B&W.

I've been fascinated reading some of the sites I've found on the web about B&W printing, particularly Paul Roark material.

Because of what I've learned, I'm turning my old Epson R200 into a strictly B&W printer using an inkset from MIS. I'm starting with the neutral tone inkset and will explore the warm tone set later.

In the meantime, I'm printing on the R200 just using BO to see what I can do.

I'm not ready to so the same with my R2880 -- especially since I love the ABW mode and the images I've gotten so far with it. But I may explore B&W inksets for it sometime in the future.

I've browsed through this site and I'm sure there is a LOT more that I have to learn about this process. I am also glad to see Paul Roark is a member of this group.

Hello Rusty,

Welcome to the forum.

The R200 is an excellent printer. I got several years of good service out of one but it finally died and went the way of all things (now using an R2400 with ABW).

Please see article #10 at the link below for a variable tone inkset for the R200 using MIS inks.

Regards,
Clayton

Thanks Clayton. Actually, I already read all of your articles, including the one you just referenced. Good stuff.

For now I am just printing BO with stock cartridges on my R200 with pretty good results. I was getting some slight banding but I changed the black cartridge today and now I'm not getting any perceptible (but I haven't looked through a loupe).

Rusty,

If you are using MIS ink & carts, when you start seeing excessive globs of Black
ink, refill.

I thought the most oddest thing was when the cart started running low it
actually "spits" more ink out than normally expected.

Phillip: Thanks for that tip. I haven't received my MIS carts yet but I will keep that in mind down the road.

I think Paul wrote a short piece in one of his papers about making sure you have
plenty of ink before you start the printing process. Keep in mind that if you
work in the tradition of working prints you will print several times before you
are satisfied. Eveything is on track and all of a sudden there very odd missing
tones or splattering. Check your ink levels. When everything else fails common
sense, check the cartridges.
