Whitest mat paper ...

Whitest mat paper ...

2011-09-28 by Lew Schwartz

Since I've migrated from a traditional darkroom, I've been digitally
printing on Epson Exhibition Fiber glossy. This stuff looks great, but the
paper base is so much whiter & brighter than the traditional stuff I'd been
using that it makes my Crescent White Glove mats look a little dingy. White
Glove is among the whitest Crescent makes .... so can anyone suggest a
whiter mat?

Hi Lew:

If you plan to frame most of your prints and if only you will see them with mats, you might want to do a quick test under glass or acrylic and look at them under daylight and tungsten (maybe even fluorescent). The difference may disappear due to the inherent UV filters in the glass.

If you plan to sell them matted only, I understand why you would want them to more closely match without any glass or acrylic.

All the best,

Andrew

my experience is that there are no fine art matte boards with anywhere near the optical brighteners in many of the inkjet papers, so the mismatch is unavoidable. Frankly, I'd pick a paper that is less blue, using less brighteners. The mismatch can be acceptable sometimes with a matte that overlaps the image a touch, in other words a non floating image. This way you don't see the paper white right against the matte color. To me though, the highlights still look blue with those papers.
I hate to suggest you change papers, but there are many good performers with a more neutral paper base if you chose to do so.

Yes, this my first try ( & normal practice anyway), ie if I stay away from
letting the image float, the whites are harnessed for the exclusive use &
effect of my highlights which is very cool imo.

Sooner than later the EEF will be warm, shifting from a 1.5 to -1.3, b
-5 to +4. In prints made on it with Canon Lucia pigments or Epson K3 it
is the paper white that shifts extremely. The white reflectance stays at
the same level with L 96.0. A matt paper that matches the EEF halfway
its degradation could be a solution but I think that EEF is not
signature worthy in the first place.

Crescent makes a bright white rag #1613 named "Very White". It works real good w/eboni - b/o prints or any grayscale artwork. I've been framing my b&w work for years with it and everyone likes it. (It does not look good with sepia or any color in the print though).

Is there a resource (URL or otherwise) that indicates whether the board is brightened with OBAs. Full Lab data would also be very nice.

Maybe I will take my UV flashlight to the local frame shop.

Does iPone or droid have a spectro app yet?

Paul, I will send you a sample piece in the mail if you email me a mailing address, and you can test it firsthand if you like.

I should add, that this is the 'whitest' mat I could find, but the rag is the only version this 'very white' color comes in, in the Crescent line.

I could extend the inkjet paper measurements I have with measurements of
matt boards. But I have only access to boards sold in Europe like
Moorman's range.
Anyway, if a board has to match fresh EEF in brightness it will have OBAs.

1400 to R1800?

2011-10-13 by Sylvain M.

Hi all,

Still bo be confirmed but I might have the opportunity to
get a used R1800 for a few bucks. Would it be worth to replace my
current 1400 (installed with Eb1400 kit)?

The R1800 is a "1.5pl" as
well as the 1400, but with 8 cartridges instead of 6... But is it enough
to change?

The 1800s can be fantastic printers and they can also be real pain in the necks with clogging problems. They also seem to be very uneven from one unit to the next. (I've had three of them).

If you wanted one to play with, (8 channels can give you a lot of options), I'd say go for it, but as a replacement for the 1400 (which came after the 1800 and where Epson seems to have worked most of the bugs out of the 1.5 pl printers) I think you could be very disappointed.

Thank you for your feedback. I will keep my 1400.

Have a nice
