Paper trimmer/cutter recommendation

Paper trimmer/cutter recommendation

2011-10-23 by Lew Schwartz

Can anyone recommend one that'll cut a really straight line? I used one of
the better guillotine styles some years back, but with heaver paper the pull
moved things around, so cuts were not straight. I have to cut out multiple
prints from heavier paper (Exhibition Fiber) ... so will I be better off
doing this by hand with a really sharp X-ACTO and straight edge or is there
something really reliable now?

Lew..

IMHO the "BEST" you can get is a twin rail ROTATRIM..

Here it is at B&H..Mine is over 30 years old, and cuts as "NEW"!!

I second that suggestion,

Either that, or a good matte cutter will cut straight also. But the
Rotatrim, you don't have to change blades.

Lew,
You have two ways to go.. Get a guillotine with a hold down pad or go to something like the rototrim but even a rototrim can scoot on you ... I have both.. Of the two my Dahle cutter is the best.. I print a lot for clients.. on many different material.. I set up a side shelf for drops and a light on my Dahle and a lower small light facing up.. When I slide a print in to get trimmed I can visually see a precise alignment as the light shines thru the material.. Then I hit the foot pedal for the hold down pad and it's dead nuts every time. It also has standard layouts on the table and adjustable stops that can be set anywhere.. On production you can stack maybe 2 or 3 and cut them at one time and still get a good edge..more then that and you start to loose it. and get a few fuzzies. My Dahle has a self sharpening blade.. I've been using it fo r10 years and it's still going fime.. It's actually designed to cut mat board..

The rotatrim is the Mercedes of trimmers. The Volkswagen (or Honda) of trimmers is the Fiskars 24" (A2-size) - it's plastic, but sturdy, well-designed and costs half as much. It's a good value and good deal if you don't need the Rotatrim.

I love my Kutrimmer 1080 on a stand and has a peddle to hold paper in place. I've had it for many years and expect I will have it forever. The blade can be sharpened, but I don't know anyone who can do it. I've used it to cut binders board, photo papers, watercolor papers, films, etc and it has saved my arm/shoulder immensely.

I have a Carl rotary trimmer that I have been very pleased with:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/757429-REG/Carl_CUI72220_DC_220_15_Heavy_Duty_Rotary.html

This one looks a little different from mine, but I think it is probably just an aesthetic upgrade.

This trimmer works differently than the Rotatrim models. Instead of a rotary blade that works against a fixed blade (like a guillotine cutter or like a pair of scissors), in the Carl the rotary blade cuts straight through the paper against a semi-hard surface. I'm sure that this is cheaper to build, and the blade and cutting surface are replaceable. But, it seems to work quite well for modest work loads. Another feature is that the paper is clamped down against the work surface. This adds another two steps in using the trimmer, but the advantage is that the paper definitely stays put. Another bonus is that there are special blades available for scoring or perforating paper. The only part of it that I haven't been pleased with is the magnetic guide for aligning the paper, which I don't find very reliable.

Another very inexpensive alternative if you just want a step up from a straight edge and X-acto knife is this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/17524-REG/Falcon_Marshall_MSFPTC_Personal_Size_Paper_Cutter.html

Despite all appearances, it works very well.
