Need new printer

2012-10-18 by njfranknj

What new model desktop printers that have continuous flow systems (bulk ink) available are you folks currently using? I'm about to take the plunge and replace my Epson 2200 that has been reliably using a Niagara CFS with MIS inks.

I don't need a large printer, 13x19 inches is fine, but I do hate to have to pay Epson's ink prices unless their ink is much better than anything I can get in bulk. I also don't need huge gamut inksets, my images tend to be more subtle and MIS PRO and B&W pigment inks work fine. Also, I prefer matte papers.

If there are good alternatives to a CFS system, I'd like to hear about it, too.

I have 2 Epson 1400's (Now a 1430))
One is filled with MIS UT-14 B&W pig inks, and the other is filled with LYSON XG Claria equivalent dyes..NO problems whatsoever for over 3 years..Just buy a set of empty carts from MIS and fill them with what you want to..I had 3 or 4 CFS systems that KILLED printers..Refilling individually is easy, and saves alot of $$$'s..

MIS has a CFS for the R3000, but they have carts with auto-reset chips
also. The newer carts hold about 28-30ml, so the refill isn't a big deal.

The only problem (read that frustration) I have with these carts is they
will not reset until they are at 10% or less--but not 0%. I keep mine
full and just do a reset when the cart thinks I need it.

Epson does not show percentages in the monitor though. The WIC reset
tool will do that part free. The MIS carts DO show up as genuine Epson,
so that nag is gone.

The only other option I would consider, if not a CFS, is the carts from
Cone. However, they are about twice the price.
The only difference I see is they have some tiny battery embedded and
you reset them with a tweezers or paper clip. You can reset them any
time. Nice touch but not worth the cost to me. Otherwise they are
identical.

Coming from an R2400, I bought the set of carts, but only the inks I
needed. I print matte only so I just used the PK black I had hanging
around. That was cheaper than buying a starter kit with syringes, etc.
that were on hand from the 2400.

Price wise, watch the Epson rebates. And, watch them closely. Sometimes
they exempt certain retailers.
Atlex always has good prices and ships quickly. They are included in
the rebates usually.

Re: Need new printer - Lyson XG Inks

Eddie:

Can you comment on your experience with Lyson XG inks, please. I have been using MIS color dye ink in my 1400 and am generally pleased with it, but it does fade quite a bit over a year or two. I have been looking for a dye ink that has better longevity than MIS and lower cost than Epson Claria. Lyson looks like it might be a good choice if it lives up to their claims.

Homer..

My experience has been excellent..I have work that's over 4 years old on these XG inks with no noticeable degradation of the images..Understand that my "tests" have not been empirical..I do spray virtually all my prints with "PRINT SHIELD", and many of them are also mounted and framed under glass..Lyson claims these inks to be "archival", but I've not seen any fact-based info to back it up....If you're using Epson inks, Red River paper is a great marriage of quality and economy..If you use the Lyson inks with a 3rd party paper, you may need custom profiles.I've had profiles made by http://www.profilesbyrick.com at around a VERY reasonable $25.00 for each paper/ink combination..Here's a link to the Lyson USA site: http://ink2image.com/Fotonic.html ..Also when perusing their site, check out their "TRIO" system of cartridges..I see no reason that you couldn't use MIS empty carts just as well..(I think MIS has them on sale right now for like $26.00 for a full set of 6)..I use these in my B&W printer...Good luck on what you decide, and should you go for a "1430", there are often sales and rebates on this fantasic printer..
