QTR Create ICC Profiles and PS CS6?

QTR Create ICC Profiles and PS CS6?

2013-02-25 by wwodets

I have been using Paul's wonderful Create ICC (ver. 2.4.2) for several years on a 4800 with four blacks. I have just now installed PS CS6 on my computer. In the printer dialogue, PS does not list profiles made with Create ICC. With my previous CS3, everything worked just fine. I read on the Internet that CS6 will only display as options profiles that are "compatible with the printer selected." I'm imagining that the Create ICC profiles don't look like profiles for the 4800, an RGB printer. (I should mention that CS6 is happy to display a slew of monitor profiles.)

Does anyone know of this problem or have a workaround?

Thanks,
Walt

"Create ICC" is Roy Harrington's program and part of his QuadToneRip suite.

See http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html

I use the QTR program to make ICCs, but QTR is Roy's creation.

That surprises me. I do not have CS6 running any more, but if the system
is set such that PS controls the color management, the ICCs should show.

Later versions of PS have required that the printer be set to "no color
adjustment" as opposed to "color controls." This stopped the use of ICCs
that I'd made earlier that used the "color controls" as the printer
setting.

I'm on a Mac and and I have no problems with Create ICC profiles (colour versions) showing up in CS6. That said, I've left CS3 on for printing and more recently, I started using Roy's new Print program. I use CS6 only for profile conversion prior to printing (i.e. convert file, save, load into QTR-Print-Tool, print).

Paul, thank you for the response. I've been using your yellow position carbon/four black set up with the Create ICC profiles and ABW and I guess my mind just credited you for the whole wonderful workflow! So my thanks to Roy too.

I've found the problem. In CS6 with the 4800, CS6 will only recognize RGB profiles (including, stupidly, monitors, etc., etc.) So dragging the Measure Tool data files to Create ICC-RGB (which also comes with Quad Tone RIP) solves the problem. The use of RGB profiles produces no change in the printed image that I can see. Do you see this as a problem somehow?

Paul- I've looked and CS6 is having no problems with "color controls" in the printer driver. If I went to "no color adjustment" I wouldn't be able to adjust tone, which is essential for your four black system.

Terry- I'm having no problem with the profiles as long as they're the RGB profiles (created with "QTR Create ICC-RGB" as opposed to "QTR Create ICC"). Printing from CS6 is just fine now, but I'm on a PC. I too have left CS3 on my computer, just because. I wouldn't have gone to CS 6 at all except that I needed the RAW file handling of some new cameras and there seemed no other way to get it.

It's not clear if this issue is just related to the grayscale v. color
ICCs.

I currently make only color ICCs, but my older grayscale versions that
simply perfected the underlying "color controls" workflows are still used,
and as people "upgrade" their systems they run into problems.

I don't generally support old inksets with new profiles. With UT14, the PS
curves were provided for people to make new ICCs as needed. That need is a
barrier to people who are just starting out.

-Terry, I'm wondering what advantages you get out of Roy's print program vs. CS3 or, for that matter, CS6. Is it page layout?

It maintains correct use of QTR Create ICC profiles which in later versions of OS-X got "broken" by virtue of Mac doing a conversion to Generic Gray.

I'm not certain of this answer, because I am still using CS4, but I had a similar issue with Lr4 and it may be the same for CS6.

With Lr4 you have to create your ICC as an RGB-ICC. Lr4 will not show any grayscale-ICCs. You can check the ICC folder and the file will be there, but Lr4 will not display it.

The fix is easy: use the Create RGB-ICC tool instead of the 'plain' Create ICC tool. Apparently, there is no difference in the output, other than that you can actually use them! If you still have your text files, it only takes a minute to create the new ICCs.

Yes, page layout is the primary driver for me. I also like breaking my dependence on CS3. Added to that the page layout programs loads a lot faster.

Aside from black and white I print colour canvas on a 44" Canon printer. It is a joy to simply define a page large enough to hold a set of images and then drop them on it. Roy defines 0.0" as paper edge so I can precisely position an image at the top left or right and save myself two cuts. I used to do all this in Photoshop before using guides, etc. The tool has reduced my set up time and I can focus my mind on other things now.

Yes, this is exactly what I did for CS6 and it now works fine. This is a very stupid thing Adobe did, because it will display *any* RGB profile--monitor profiles, camera profiles, etc. and serves no purpose at all that I can see. Create ICC RGB is the answer for CS6.
