Does anyone have recipes for printing Ebony-type carbon based prints on an Epson 3800, either using an RIP or the epson B&W driver? Thanks. Les

Hi Les,
Can you add details about what you mean by asking for a recipe?
If you are looking for general information, I started down this path a
couple of years ago and it has been going well. In my opinion, the best two
resources for this are:
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/ which has a wealth of information
about Eboni printing for several models of Epson printers and which
shouldn't be hard to translate to your situation.
http://www.piezography.com/PiezoPress/ which has a turnkey solution for
monochrome printing that, in my experience, drops in and works.
Best,
Pete

Thanks Pete, I've looked at Paul's great website and I would like to use his guidelines for saving ink costs by diluting my own inks for the 8 positions on the 3800, but I can't find a recipe for dilution for an 8 ink machine. I've also found Jon Cone's inksets and they look fine, except they are quite expensive to use over the long term on a retirement pension. Hi Les, Paul just wrote up a good, concise procedure for calibrating a set of Eboni inks with QTR (posted March 22): Paul roark.paul@... via<http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=1311182> yahoogroups.com Mar 22 (3 days ago) to DigitalBlackan. As I mentioned in the "Blacks, EB6 and Epson driver" thread, above, I used a flatbed scanner to profile Red River Polar Matte for QTR. I've documented the procedure and results at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/QTR-Flatbed.pdf . Hopefully this plus Roy's StepWedge Tool (at http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRdownload.html ) will help those with flatbeds and no spectros. Paul www.PaulRoark.com <http://www.paulroark.com/> I used much the same procedure to calibrate a 7-shade printer a few weeks ago (with my own choices for dilutions). My personal experience suggests to me that the next time I mix up a batch of inks I'll increase the dilution for most of the shades; the system seems robust enough to handle this kind of tinkering. Between Paul's years of experimenting and writing and Roy Harrington's software, this is a pretty capable system. The inks themselves are easy. It appears to be a rather standard Epson K3 printer. I don't know of people who have profiles, but since QTR supports the printer, re-linearizing other K3 printer profiles should work. Also, QTR is not that hard to learn for profiling. See the flatbed scanner abbreviated procedure I've used at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/QTR-Flatbed.pdf The short answer is that the 3800 should work fine, as long as you can get good carts. Leslie Just a couple of thoughts: 1 You are unlikely to see any benefit from using all 8 cartridges, I'd go with Paul's Eboni 6 set and run two cartridges with cleaner/base. 2 There is more to the cost of using these inksets than just buying the ink. Jon Cone's inksets, whilst expensive are truly plug and play. He provides lots of profiles which are packaged with QTR. I have also never had any issues with clogging with his K7 inksets. Paul's inksets are much cheaper to buy but require a bit more work from the user, you will probably have to create your own profiles and experiment a little. That can be fun but won't necessarily be lower cost by the time you have it all working. I have also had some clogging issues with the MIS inksets when they aren't used frequently. I've got, use and like both Cone and MIS inksets. I think Eboni gives the better blacks and works better on uncoated papers but needs more user input. David Whistance ________________________________

Thanks, Paul and all others who have helped. I should be able to take it from here. I really appreciate this great group. Les --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Paul Roark <roark.paul@...> wrote:

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/7800-EbHP-2013.pdf It is also true that I am not in the ink business and do not make a full set of profiles, etc. available for a broad range of printers. I mostly just publish what I do for others to use as they see fit. Forums like this one and http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/messages offer a certain amount of support, but we're basically a bunch of hackers. :) Paul www.PaulRoark.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
