Moiré problems

Moiré problems

2014-03-26 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

I am trying to print a copy of a 19th century wood engraving -- you can
see the image on this page: http://www.marquis-kyle.com.au/mt/002036.php

The fine near-parallel engraved lines produce disturbing moir\ufffd patterns
in the print in areas of similar tone, such as in parts of the sky. The
same problem, in more extreme form, can be seen in various
magnifications of the zoomify image on the web page.

Can anyone here give me some ideas for processing the image to avoid
this problem in the print, while retaining as much detail as possible?

I'm using Photoshop CS6 Extended to make a gray scale TIF, for printing
on an Epson R2400 on Hahnemuhle PhotoRag via QuadtoneRIP.

I think this problem is going to continue to be an issue no matter what you
do short of blurring the lines. They run in all directions and depending on
the display size and resolution they will create moir or not, so it's a
problem on the viewer's end. Maybe you should present it blurred into a
continuous tone image for the small view, using a median filter or whatever
you prefer, and then skip the zoom and offer a 100% view which can be panned
or shown full screen. It's all those in between sizes that create the worst
moir patterns. And of course angle the original on the scanner for the
least offensive result too.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions -- very helpful. I'm pleased to
report that re-scanning at higher resolution did the trick!
